The transition through the gate was absolutely mind-blowing. On one side, the whole world was stark white. On the other, it was a rather large savanna. Takezo took moment to admire this seemingly magic portal. A whole new world, it seemed, attached to yet another new world.
Finding Carrefore was almost ridiculously easy. With the savanna being so broad and flat, the buildings jutting up from the earth were almost an eyesore. Not that he cared much for either wilderness or civilization. Both were good for one thing, but bad for another.
Takezo left the curious gate behind with little more than a glance behind him. The walk was almost peaceful, with a few wildlife creatures off in the distance, but not really paying him attention. It reminded him of his time in the mountains. Tough as life, but rewarding if you could make it.
He watched an odd creature off in the distance as he walked. It napped in the afternoon sun, generally being lazy. He did not know what the creature was, but its thick fur around its neck looked like it would make a great mantle, and its jaw of teeth would look great as a helmet. He would never wear such a thing, but he could imagine the showy shoguns prancing about in a skin of such an animal. The thought made him chuckle. Such boastful bastards always coward at the tip of a sword; he had never met a proud man in life die with such honor.
After a while, Takezo turned his focus away. It was growing difficult craning his neck around, and with the town so close he could almost hear the activities going on within. Faint voices caught his ear, a few boisterous laughs. Even a scream, but that sounded further into the town than the laughter, and he could not tell what exact type of scream it was. It could be of fear, surprise, or just someone making noise.
The sounds grew the closer he came. As he entered the town, he realized what was going on. The blustering of people surrounding a tent were full of energy as they waited. Above the tent, on a large sign, Takezo read exactly what he was hoping for; “Dante’s Abyss Registration.” A smirk formed.
He approached. A few civilians took note of him, ushering him along. “Are ya gonna sign up?” “Looks like we’ve got a live one!” “Ha! Another li’l Prime thinkin’ he can win the big one!” “Are you fast? Better hope so, ‘cause you’re gonna be doin’ a lot of runnin’ in there!” Their goading words set his blood to boil.
Inside the tent, a woman with bright hair handed him a clip board and pen. He glanced it over for a moment, then looked around. “There’s no ink.”
“No ink, he says! Haaahaha! He’s one of dem Cameltots!”
“It rights without ink, honey, it’s called a Pen.” The woman said, somewhat kindly – if a bit brief. With that in mind, Takezo filled out the form.
What is your name?
Shinmen Tokezo.
How long have you been in the Omniverse?
Two or three hours.
Where do you live in the Omniverse?
I am a Vagabond.
What is your current job?
I am a Vagabond.
What was your life like back in your own world?
I lived in the mountains near my village alone for a while, to train. I left when I was seventeen, to search for and cut down powerful generals, to prove and increase my strength as a swordsman.
Why are you joining Dante’s Abyss?
To win.
Handing the clipboard back, the woman gave it a quick read. Her brow rises bit by bit over a few of the questions. “Vagabond? … Hmm.” Her eyes flick up, regarding Takezo for a moment. “Only a couple of hours, and you’re already signing up for the Abyss… You’ve got guts, kid. Right this way.”
Takezo was escorted towards an odd metal contraption. He was pushed onto it, a bit reluctantly, at first. “What is this?”
“No worries, it’s just a Recall station.” Her lips pursed for a moment, realizing this newcomer might not quite understand. “It’s going to take you to the event area… by… magic…” That worked for now. She would let someone else try to explain technology to this man. “If you must throw up, please find a trashcan on the other side.” And like that, the machine activated, and the world changed in an instant.
