Yea, if your move is a hammer and involves you like, reaching above your head and dramatically summoning your hammer with a clap of thunder, that's fine.
The restriction is more so for moves that can randomly create stuff. Gilgamesh, for instance, had a move where he could create a portal gate and just snatch random crap from it. It's there to prevent people from just being like "oh just let me pull some firewood out of my ass", because that's lame.
Mimic works fine, regardless of whatever mechanism you use to explain it in-character.
