Back to Basics

"Omigawd." Millie said, her eyes lighting up. She tossed her book to the side, where it slid into her small stack, sending all of the ancient titles toppling to the ground. Whatever. They were all useless anyway. Millie slapped her hands on the burnished wood between them and leaned towards Arle, a big grin on her hardened features.

"You'z a Prime? For real gurl?" Millie squealed, her voice hitching progressively higher. Arle donned a worried expression before nodding sheepishly. Leviathan let loose an uncharacteristic squeal.

"You're adorable!"

Mr. Jingles already knew this, of course. He also knew that the secondary was not actually talking about him, but decided to act as if she had been addressing him, all the same. It was really just for everyone's benefit; these poor humans didn't know any better. As a reward for her flattery, Mr. Jingles rose on to his feet and gave Leviathan a slow, loving blink. The human absentmindedly reached over and began stroking his bristly forehead. All was well.

Arle, on the other hand, wasn't sure whether she should feel complimented or insulted by Millie's apparent ecstasy. Her mixed feelings were set aside once again as a stack of books deposited themselves heavily on the table in front of her. The young mage looked up to see what had delivered them, but there weren't any sort of book fairies or constructs or anything. It was all starting to become a bit much. Still, the fresh Prime took a moment to browse over the spines of the dusty tomes. The stack contained such gems as 'Baby's First Fireball', 'How to Take your Robe Measurements', 'More than a Hat and Wand: A Primer on Arcane Theory', and one that grabbed her attention in particular, 'Edgelords 101: Your Fast-Track to Badass'. Mr. Jingles preoccupied himself by rubbing his face on the pointy edges of the hard-cover titles and purring lightly. Millie had stopped petting him, but that was okay. She'd realize her mistake eventually. As for the younger girl's question, he chose to answer for himself.

"Meeeeehhrr? Rhhm." he said casually. As the words left his mouth, his entire body seemed to levitate as if being picked up by an unseen force, before landing on top of Arle's book stack. Millie grinned at him dumbly. This was the best cat ever. It was true. Arle simply nodded slowly before fidgeting some more. Alas, it seemed that it would be a long time before she was offered a moment just to think.

"I'm Leviathan. Well. My real name is Millie, but no one calls be that." Millie said, forcibly grabbing Arle's comparatively dainty hand and shaking it brusquely.
And, we dream of home I dream of life out of here Their dreams are small My dreams don't know fear I got my heart full of hope I will change everything No matter what I'm told How impossible it seems We did it before And we'll do it again We're indestructible Even when we're tired And we've been here before Just you and I
Don't try to rescue me I don't need to be rescued
