The oppressive darkness instilled its choking grip upon her as Nova crawled within the air vent, her senses torn away from her one by one. Would that she could, the psychic would have relied upon her telepathic abilities in feeling her way forward. On the other hand, the silence around her was what had allowed her to escape in the first place. It was, in a sense oddly calming and unnerving at the same time. As much as she had always desired for the total silence and loved the psi-screens that blocked her from the outside world, she also realized she’d learnt to rely on them when it came to operating on missions. Wanted to or not, the agent was forced to resort to the slow agonizing crawl, as she quietly felt her way forward with her hands.
Too many times had she already reached a dead end, having taken the a turn in the endless maze of tunnels that led to naught but a dead end. An odd sense of familiarity swept through her, during the mission where she had saved Kelerchian, she had crept through fairly similar air vents. Of course, back then she had had all of the gear that made such an expedition much easier. Oh what she would’ve given for a ghost suit and the ever so informative visor.
Despite her vast experience, the darkness of the tunnels was unsettling at best, and it was only the endless hours of training and experience that suppressed the seeds of panic that welled somewhere deep within her, buried away by the sheer amount of conditioning. A sense of impatience welled within, navigating the labyrinth with naught but a medical garb, her knees and elbows bruised.
--------------
A map drawn within her head, the operative stopped within the vent, having arrived at a four way intersection of tunnels that she now returned to for the third time. There was only one direction Nova hadn’t already been to, a smidge of annoyance boiling within her. If she’d had her powers, she would’ve just mapped the entire building, without the need for personal reconnaissance. Of course, she would’ve also ended up unable to move on the floor of her cell.
Of course, within the tunnels, she’d occasionally passed above rooms, the sounds of fighting still to be heard from the distance, the alarms blaring. She had sought for a way upward for the entirety of her time within the darkness. As she slid through the intersection into the fourth and final unvisited passage.
As she crawled the constantly elevating pipeline, Nova waved her way through what she perceived to be spiderwebs. The girl cursed within her mind, hoping that whoevers home she had just so cruelly disturbed, would not be of a poisonous variety, potentially leaving her to rot in the tight metal tube. Ironically, such would have contaminated the entire facility’s air quality, which gave her a faint sense of amusement.
Light glittered into the darkness as Nova reached the apex of the ascending tunnel, slowing down her advancement until she reached the grills that allowed her to peer into the room below her. The room itself had no one in it, outfitted with a desk and a chair, the latter lined with fabric, as well as a few monitors across the walls, as well as a few bookcases. Through the window on the door, Nova could just barely catch a sign hanging from the ceiling labeled “Armo--”.
Armory, now if only I knew where the exit was.. Nova lamented, the sign only so-and-so visible from her hidden vantage point. But, given she hadn’t the freedom of direction, the operative crawled forth into the darkness once more.
