As Kal’roc laid in his cot wasting time that could be used more efficiently; he began to wonder; why, why was he chosen out of an infinite number of candidates. It wasn’t like he was special, he was not inherently strong or fast. He was sluggish here but; He did seem to be stronger by the force he put behind the throws; but even with the power boost he had not done anything positive to the races; he was a man of war, nothing more and nothing less. He felt he was back at the start of this question, and he just gave more questions than answers. “What has this god among men done to me?”
He shuddered in the power he held. “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” He didn’t know why he thought of that quote, but it caused a potent fear to rise in his very soul. The draconian decided a walk would do well for his mind, and body. Plus learning about the division he is working, and living with would help to create trust among them. He took a good long look at the oak wood room, he was staying in. There were ten double, decker bunks with an armor, and weapons rack by the door, for quicker armament.
He reached the doorway, and looked at the groups of soldiers walking past the door talking happily. He looked forlorn as he remembered a close friend that was with him through thick and thin. Her name was Capri, and she had saved his life on more than one occasion.
The battle was almost won; Kal’roc would just need to win this last push, and the assault forces, no his comrades would take their place in universal history. He pulled out a round object, that after flicking a switch a map, flickered into life. He needed surveillance of the battle, and he needed it now to make the better choice. “Activate the copters!” At his command five drones activated, giving him a five pictures on his computer. At that moment an ambush smashed into his right flank of soldiers, and at the same time one by one each copter’s camera stopped working, and he could hear a crash in the near distance. He got up after closing down the computer and any machines he was using, and grabbed his katana before running outside the tent; what he saw was nothing less than absolute mayhem.
He unsheathed his katana before going on a rampage, one two three another ambusher fell to his blade. Four five six, the click of bullets reign. As he dove for cover behind a rock wall, a few bullets hit his wing. In a flash of rage and pain he cursed whoever had shot his wing as he crashed into the dry rock behind the rock wall “Go to the ever dark ambushers.” he took a look at the damage the wing had sustained, now that he was behind a sort of cover. He saw that no bones were broken, just the leathery skin that protected the wings, the wings felt surprisingly soft, and the main reason the dragon creatures were hunted, was for their leather. It could withstand depending on the species; both extremes of the temperature, and high and low pressures.
He saw a woman in a nomad’s outfit rush to the wall leaping over cars, and tanks with a walking stick. He yelled for medical attention, and to his luck the woman turned and got to him. She looked through her satchel and pulled out a medical item, which was shaped like a pistol except for the fact that it had a syringe poking out. She spoke with a soft tone, that if you listened a little harder, you could hear a voice that demanded respect. “Now hold still. We lost out major assault leaders, you are the last one left. We are scattering we need your voice to give us hope, that a victory is still possible.” He felt the needle, and felt power enter his body. He laughed, as the gem roared to life with a blue fire lighting across the katana’s blade. “By the great dragon, we will not fail!” he looked at her with a deep thanks. “What is your name medic, and thank you?” The female looked at him in the eye and said four words before heading on to other people that need her help. “My name is Capri.”
He jumped over the wall, and saw the men retreating. He raised his katana to the sky, before calling out. “Men, do not fear death, for death is just a challenge we must beat. So beat back the assault, show them the reason the empire stands. To me men!” His voice rings out through the desert; high and loud and clear to all the listened on that day. His forces stopped running, as his voice gave them hope; one by one each man walked up to him raised there weapon, and gave the battle cry. Whether it be Deus vult, or Quoniam excelsus Dominus et draco! Or even the lesser cry Pro imperio!
The red draconian then pointed his katana to the advancing army, and cried. “For honor and glory, Attack!” The tenth assault forces, started to run as Kal’roc ran with the army. Unlike most generals, and captains he fought with his men risking his life just like any one of them. All of them fighting, for the prospect of a better life for their kids. One where they would not be treated with injustice, and dishonor.
He felt his mind jolted back to reality as he walked out of the garrison. He breathed the clean air, that would be a luxury to have back home. He as he walked to the market spoke his mind. “This feels like home, and I promise to protect it to my last second here no matter how long it may be.” The cheery feel of the morning only added to the fact that musicians were out playing. He could see kids running out in the streets, playing, dancing, even play fighting. He smiled as he watched the kids; until he saw a kid that was in grimy clothes, a boy to the looks of it and twelve years of age, He was trying to play an ocarina to little avail making a wrong note, or holding a note for too long.
As Kal walked up to the kid, the kid grew flustered by the beat red face, and the mistakes grew in quantity and size. Even though Kal had never played a ocarina before, he tried to get the kid to relax. “Hey, what is your name? Mine is Kal’roc.” Kal held out his hand wishing the kid would shake the leathery hand. The kid shuffled away from him, they held a distrust in their eyes that only got stronger. Kal sat down as he told the kid to wait a second, and he would give him something. “Let me get you something, out of the kindness of my heart; now I know you may not trust me, but most people don’t, now I would like to pay you something.”
Kal pulled out a single gold coin, and put it in the kid’s hand. “Now in my town, its tradition to give something of worth, to the needy.’ He motioned to the kid to follow him, the kid looked at the coin and a twinkle shone in his eyes as he gets up, and smiled. Kal’roc put his hand up to his chin and tapped his cheek in deep thought. ‘now let’s see, you probably need some food, and a new ocarina?” He looked at the kid to see if he was right; The kid looked down and touched the ocarina almost like it was important. “Mister Roc why are you helping me? No one has ever helped me like this, unless you want something that I have.”
The kid walked back some, before hitting his back on the wall, he was territorial of the ocarina for some reason, and the draconian sighed. He thought deeply about this situation, and the passerby could hear the scratching of scale on a bone like substance. This is going to be hard, I just wanted to help him. He decided that the kid, could have information; so he calmly asked. “Now, I’m a prime, apparently. Now i can make anything that I please with enough omnilium. All I would want from you, is being a friend, and information. But given your situation, i want only your friendship, plus it looks like you need someone to be your friend.
The kid walked up to Kal’roc, and whispered his voice shaking with absolute fear. “My name is . . . ‘He looked around quickly before continuing. ‘John . . . my name is john.” Kal’roc asked John if he would like to head with him to the market. John shook his head. “Nah, you already gave enough help to me. As Kal’roc got up to head he saw the kid get wrangled by two guards. John started to scream telling the guards that he was innocent, and Kal’roc was faced with a decision, He could tell the guards to let the kid go, or let the kid go to wherever fate took him. And he decided what to do.
He shuddered in the power he held. “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” He didn’t know why he thought of that quote, but it caused a potent fear to rise in his very soul.
