The cave was like a sauna. Dawn could feel the hot air pushing out of the cave in a humid blast of heat. One of the challenges of joining this cult must have involved not melting inside. If so many probably perished from a heatstroke alone. The vigilante folded in her wings and wiped some sweat from her brow. Not was she was hoping for but it was the only lead she had and it was time for Kagetsume to leave. Just as she started walking, the demon’s voice rose in her head.
You think you expel me so easily? Your efforts are in vain girl. Dawn only tried to ignore her uninvited guest but that only made her talk more. What are you going to when this is over and you realize there is nothing you can do to be free of me?
“I will stab myself with a stake.” She said under her breath, paying more attention to tunnels ahead of her. “I’d rather die free than live a slave to you.” Kage’s demonic laugh echoed through Dawn’s mind. Their conversations were never long, but they always gave Dawn a headache. Whether it was because of the demonic influence seeping into the fibers of her being or because she just hated that voice, she was unsure.
The tunnel was long and the journey was arduous and the heat was becoming completely unbearable. Nothing of mention happened in the first tunnel, just the heat. As she went deeper, though, a fork split the cave in three paths. No indicators were placed in the cave that would lead to the place she needed to go, so it was random choice. Dawn could see no signs of danger down any of them from where she was now. The vigilante pondered on a decision then decided to head down the path on the right. As she walked through the opening, the earth began to tremble. Something triggered a plate shift in the ground and was causing an earthquake. Dust crumbled down over Dawn from the ceiling. She quickly moved forward to avoid the falling rocks over her head. The crashed down right on her heels, if she was any slower, she would have been made a pancake.
Once the plate shift finally settled, the way behind her was completely blocked. Forward was the only way now. The vigilante caught her breath and continued down the path of death and demons.
