Dark Decisions II
#4
There were several races of Ponykind, each with their own special abilities that the others didn't have.  First there were the Pegasi. The Pegasi were known for their hollow and light bone structures,  but durability that allowed them to survive crashes. Their magic was centralized around their wings, allowing them to fly. This also allowed them the ability to control the weather back in Equestria. Granted there were areas where the magic regulated itself, rather than being controlled by the Pegasi. Secondly there were the bat ponies who were cousins to the Pegasi, but lacked the ability possessed by them to control the weather. This meant that they were simply better suited to be messenger, and also enforcers as well as guards. Pegasi and Bat Ponies weren't good choices for guards for Sombra. Well,  Bat Ponies might be a good choice because they looked menacing and with some modifications could look absolutely horrifying to any pony they came across.

Earth Ponies were ones who were the physically strongest. While they without the use of runes or potions couldn't perform magic like Unicorns and couldn't fly like the Pegasi or the Bat Ponies they had their advantages. Earth Ponies could grow their own food, as he had seen the Element of Honesty and her family do before he had been brought here. This had been done by watching them shortly after his being banished back under the ice. It had given him many insights on his enemies, but not enough to replicate them completely when he had blackmailed Twilight into the fight that they had earlier. Earth ponies were going to be needed to handle the cultivation of a garden, and stocking Sombra's larders full of rich and hearty food.  If the Vasty Deep ever had a winter,  Sombra planned to be ready for such a thing.

The Tyrant of the Frozen North continued thinking. Discounting Alicorns, there was one other race of Ponykind. Unicorns were the sub species of pony Sombra was a part of. While they didn't have the flying capabilities of the Pegasi, nor the ability to grow their own food Unicorns could actually use magic,  something that the other species couldn't do without external aids. There were several varieties to the magic that could be wielded. The first was instinctive, a few spells that related to the cutie mark. The next was instructive, spells learned from books. Of course there was also harmonic magic, light magic, elemental magic, chaos magic, dark magic and many other types. Dark magic was his preference, but perhaps he should learn the other types. After all being well equipped to handle any opponents was a good idea to say the least.

"Before I choose who to make my guard, I must learn more about the magic of this place. I must gain some new talents that I otherwise find myself lacking."
