Over with? “So you called people out here for a challenge, and you’re not even gonna try to enjoy it? Jeez,” I say, “I bet I know at least one person who’d do anything for a chance like this--”
Oh sweet lord that’s a grenade--
EVERYTHING goes white - not like everything wasn’t already, anyways. My ears feel heavy and like something popped in them as they ring incessantly, reminding me of a certain critical HP beeping noise. I’m pretty sure I drop Kanshou and Bakuya as I reach my hands up to my temples, grasping at my aching head. I try to shout OWWWWWWW as loudly as I can, but I can’t even hear myself speak.
When I can finally hear and see again, the jackass that threw the grenade… tosses another. Instinctively I jump back, covering my eyes with my forearm, only to find an odd sort of scent reaching my nose. It’s… interesting, worth sniffing at to see what it even is.
“Soon you'll all be met with your darkest deepest fears,” he explains, and with exasperation my arm falls to my side.
“Oh, FUCK RIGHT OFF,” I shout. “NO!”
Something reaches my twitchy, achy ears. A low-pitched humming sort of noise, circling and dancing lazily around specifically my left ear. I freeze in place.
I know what’s there.
“I swear,” I hiss, pure, unadulterated hate bubbling up in my bright blue eyes, “I’m going to kill you.”
Bees.
All at once the sense of righteous indignation vanishes as the buzzing sound begins to multiply, then multiply further and further. My arms start to tremble at my sides and my legs feel like they’re going to buckle.
Just don’t move and they won’t hurt you. I always thought that was stupid advice, like saying ‘why don’t poor people just buy more money’ or something. Easy to say, easy to prove it’s stupid.
At last my will to stand still gives in and I burst to full speed, tearing across the void screaming higher than I thought my voice could ever reach.
A quick look over my shoulder gives me a glimpse of what I’m dealing with - a torrent of yellow and black and angry, determined buzzing and tiny wings flapping and stingers begging to turn me into a human pincushion.
I don’t know how, but every time I look over my shoulder, they’re gaining on me. Getting closer and closer and closer every time, until-- at last--
...They’re gone? I skid to a stop and my scream turns to a confused whimper. My whimper turns into a growl of that same pure rage from earlier as I spin back around, whisper with contempt Trace On and begin my sprint, two blades in hand.
“SPECIAL DELIVERY,” I yell, leaping admittedly not very high into the air. “One DICKING for the sadistic asshat!”
I’m not as fast as I used to be, I note, beginning to thrust and slash at my target, but it’s definitely clear I’m faster. He’s at a disadvantage in close combat, but close combat is all I can manage.
I feint with Kanshou, pulling my left arm in for a slash - or so it seems. I get a feeling, a sort of hint in the back of my mind, he’s going to duck and use this opportunity to get out of my threat range. In response, I stop my slash, dipping to a crouch and sweeping my leg out at his feet like a pendulum across the ground. I follow swiftly with a kick to the stomach, punting his already aerial body backwards. “Fly ball!” I cheer, laughing triumphantly. I think I snort a bit while I’m laughing, puffing a bit of the gas from earlier out my nose. “Not so hot now, huh?!”
Immediately I follow up with a dash forward, getting our brawl a bit too close to everybody else involved in this challenge. Around now they’re all out of their horrible, fear-induced predicaments and beginning to join the fray. My real opponent, meanwhile, has a pair of combat knives in hand, ready to try and handle me up close and personal.
Bad move.
With a smirk I blink forward with Kanshou over my head. My battlecry echoes in the void as I bring it down - it shatters as it collides with the flat of his knife, and instinctively I drop Bakuya, letting it fade as I summon a new pair. “Trace on,” I whisper, slipping around my target, going from his left ear to his right with both words. As I take up my position in front of him again, I consider that I could use the Stadi-Various here, so I command it to play at my back while remaining in my bag. A shapeless, spectral mass begins to project the sounds of a choir and orchestra. I flip back to meet it as a foreboding, stomach-churning piece begins. I then advance with my blades hanging at my sides, grinning almost evilly.
“Should’ve been more careful with that gas,” I puff. I have to admit, I’m already feeling a bit winded, but I think I can hide it. “Just to return the favour, I’m about to be your worst nightmare.”
