With the onset of night, Cinnabar Island had become very peaceful and relaxing. The trail to Matrix and AndrAIa’s home had been eclipsed with darkness before they reached the house. Crickets were chirping while stars glowed in the night sky, along with plenty of other ambient stimuli that were new to the two of them. They only now understood it was because the computer they’d come from wasn’t capable of processing all of these factors within itself, nor did it need to.
They laughed and joked as they leisurely walked down the trail, both reminiscing about old adventures and planning for their new ones. There was a lot of adventuring, ahead, after all. AndrAIa giggled as she wrapped her arms around Matrix’s left arm. It was a perfect, peaceful moment, and it was well earned after all they’d experienced.
Matrix sensed something amiss first, and stopped in place. AndrAIa, though she didn’t know what was wrong, also stopped, and looked to Matrix curiously. She could see his robotic eye glowing as it scanned the area before them.
“What’s wrong?” AndrAIa asked as she released her boyfriend, and grasped her collapsed trident in one hand.
“Something’s ahead of us,” Matrix announced. “Two lifeforms, around our house.”
“Friendly?” AndrAIa queried, though she went ahead and extended her trident to its battle length.
Matrix watched the blurs in his enhanced vision. It was easy to tell from their placement and their heartrate that this wasn’t a welcoming party. He shook his head as he drew Gun from its hip holster. “No.”
They cautiously stepped forward, with Matrix raising his firearm. The two heat signatures that his eye detected weren’t moving, as they didn’t realize they had been made. The task at hand would simply be that much easier.
A vine shot from the shadowy bushes beside them, and wrapped about Matrix’s wrist. Both he and AndrAIa gasped in surprise, but the Bayleef that emerged jerked Matrix harshly forward, throwing him completely off balance.
Matrix hit the dirt with a thud, and looked up to see that the other two were rapidly approaching. How had he missed the third one? That was just one of many questions that he didn’t have time to ask. He stood up as the Quilava and Croconaw revealed themselves and closed in. His weapon had left his hands in the ambush, and he didn’t have time to retrieve it. Instead, he threw a powerful punch into the blue alligator Pokemon, and wasted no time kicking the fire Pokemon after a quick half turn.
AndrAIa stabbed at the yellow and green Pokemon with her trident, looking to quickly end this battle. The Bayleef was fast and agile with its vines, and grabbed the trident with one and AndrAIa’s left ankle in the other. Much the same as it had attacked Matrix, the grass Pokemon abruptly yanked the game sprite forward, and AndrAIa was flung through the air. She landed harshly on the trail, kicking up a cloud of dirt. She lost her grip on the trident, and the Bayleef grabbed her right wrist in the other vine, pinning her down by the limbs it controlled.
Matrix directed his attention back to the Croconaw just in time to see it leaping towards him, and it landed a headbutt right on his head. He screamed in pain as the Quilava jumped behind the stumbling sprite. He backed right into it and tripped, crashing to the ground. He was stunned, but he still had a plan. He held his right hand out, and his Gun instantly began to fly towards his open palm.
No sooner that he summoned the weapon to his hand, though, the Croconaw bit down on his wrist. Matrix once more roared in agony, while his weapon bounced off the water Pokemon. He twisted and punched at the Croconaw with his free arm, but it didn’t seem to faze the thick skinned monster. It began dragging him backwards while he struggled against the fangs that had him.
AndrAIa rose to her feet, struggling against the pull of the vines. The Bayleef gave another powerful tug to drag her back to the ground, but she instead jumped into the air and spun several times. The vines were immediately wrapped up in themselves, causing the Bayleef to lose its grip. She landed by her trident and snatched it into her hands quickly. The Bayleef, still struggling with its vines, unleashed a barrage of razor sharp leaves in her direction. She deflected as many as she could while she charged forward, flinching with each one that slashed her bare arms. It wasn’t enough to slow her down, and as the grass Pokemon began stumbling back, she drove her trident into its eye sockets.
Matrix pulled against the strength of the Croconaw with all the strength he had, and managed to lift it off the ground. He swung the Pokemon over himself and down onto the Quilava that approached. The impact caused the Croconaw to lose its grip and fall to the ground, while the much more fragile fire-type Pokemon was drilled partially into the dirt.
Quilava stood and let out a stream of pure fire from its mouth, which Matrix barely sidestepped in time. He approached the recovering Croconaw and kicked it in the back, causing it to faceplant once more with decisive force. He then turned to see the Quilava had jumped at him, and punched it right out of the air. The fire breather landed with a groan of pain.
AndrAIa rushed to Matrix’s side and impaled the Croconaw with her trident in a smooth, fluid motion. It gasped and gurgled on its own blood while she ripped the weapon right back out of the corpse. Matrix held his hand out and finally returned his firearm to it. He leveled it at the Quilava, which froze with wide eyes as it looked at the two marks that had survived the assassination attempt.
“Who sent you!?” Matrix demanded with a loud roar.
The Quilava didn’t respond, and instead took off towards the treeline. Matrix cursed as he fired the weapon, blasting the fire-type Pokemon with one well-placed shot. He released the weapon and let it naturally return to his hip as he and AndrAIa walked towards the final corpse.
“You need to get better about holding onto that thing,” AndrAIa teased as they walked. Matrix didn’t smile, this time. He didn’t find humor in dire situations like she could.
“They know where we live,” Matrix reminded her sternly. “The Liberation Front found us.”
“They always knew,” AndrAIa retorted as they stopped over the dead fire-type. “We knew this would happen. Just not this fast.”
Matrix nodded, slowly. He didn’t like any fight coming to his front door. This was supposed to be their place of sanctuary and safety. He’d promised Mewtwo that his fights wouldn’t end up here, but this wasn’t his fight. It was Cinnabar’s, and he had been caught up in it.
“I need to have a word with Mewtwo tomorrow,” Matrix decided. It was time to get the record straight on all of this.
“Probably a good idea,” AndrAIa remarked. “Come on. Let’s get inside.”
Matrix nodded, silently wondering if they needed to sleep in the subbasement tonight, just in case there were more assassins lurking in the woods. He hated that the Liberation Front could make him feel that way within his own home. He’d see to fixing that.
For the moment, he raised his hand and began to extract the Omnilium from the fallen. He’d get the other two just as soon as he finished with this one. It seemed cruel, almost vampiric, but it was a valuable resource, and they would do the same to him. He simply accepted the way of the world.
Dust to dust.
