Carmelita collapsed onto the dirt as she stumbled through the gate. Her body turned corporeal, she turned and stared at her hands. It had only been a few hours, but she had feared that shroud of darkness would trap her forever.
Just as suddenly, the heat hit her and she winced. She staggered to her feet, and with difficulty began to summon her police cruiser.
After it had come into existence, she collapsed into the air conditioning with a sigh of relief. She rang up Chip, and groaned until the link started.
++Carmelita! How was your trip?++
“Eventful. I think I… died?”

“Nevermind. How about you? The AI friendly?”

A third voice interjected, the static of the mouthpiece completely absent.
++Hello, my name is Al3x,++ it said ++I am willing to let you use this facility on the provision that you owe me rent.++
“Uh… sure? Maybe? What sort of rent?”

She groaned as she hung up and pulled herself into the driving seat, starting the engine and driving away into the desert.
