Carmelita was internally furious.
She’d been furious before, of course. There was the time she’d discovered Sly hadn’t really had amnesia, for example, or when Neela had falsely testified about her activities and thrown her to the Contessa’s prisons. This, however, was a cold fury, one that sliced through her sickness-induced haziness and made her tongue sharp and her wit sharper. The being in front of her had made light of her loss and followed up by insulting her appearance.
“Whilst I’m certain that a decade or two without opportunity for violence would do wonders for the bitterness, we don’t have that luxury. I will find out how to turn the inoculation into a cure for this disease, and though I don’t have time to give you one for your psychopathy, I’ll save a place for you in a hermetically sealed cellblock for when I inevitably catch you doing something worse than self-defence.”
Okor gave a derogatory chuckle the tone of rolling gravel.
“Your potential for combat is pitiful, you wear no armour and you’re still spitting weak epithets. Go away, half-man, before I end up shooting you.”
“I. Am. A. Woman!”
Carmelita threw up her hands after that outburst, fuming at having been so thoroughly outmaneuvered, and stalked away, passing Fiara with a disciplined nod before reaching Arturia.
“Come on, they said they cleared the mines. Let’s go find those escape pods so we can turn them into a means of cure dispersal.”
With that, she grabbed a line of cable and began feeding it over the edge, every other turn glancing down and grasping her wedding ring with her free hand tightly and trying desperately to not think of her last few moments with Sly.
