"You sure this is a good idea?" Came the voice of Rufus for the tenth time in as many minutes. Blink rolled her eyes as she looked down at her communicator with an annoyed look, as if he could see it. "We've been running this Exiles thing for like a week and you're already heading to a random island to meet random people for a random reason."
"I'm just checking it out," she repeated back to him again. She appreciated his concern (though not his pushiness), but he was starting to grate on her nerves. "What's the harm in just meeting the people and seeing what's what?"
"They could kill you."
"Oh." She responded, as if that was the first time she thought of it. "Yea, well, I guess that could happen."
The gadget went quiet for a bit as Blink stepped out of her fuchsia portal and onto the wooden dock underneath her. She had been 'porting around The Vasty Deep, from landmark to landmark, to make it across the water without getting too wet. She finally made it to her destination: a small dock just off of a tall tower at the corner of an island. The directions had been easy to follow, and it wasn't like the structure to easy to spot. She made it here easily, despite never being in this area.
"You're supposed to be going to Costa Del Sol to recruit the Spearmaiden," Rufus reminded her. Again, it felt like he was on repeat.
"I'll go there when I'm done here," Blink promised.
As she stepped forward towards the tower, she thought about her mission as it stood. She had just formed the Exiles Detective Agency, which was actually a front for a special ops cell of a private military. But thus far, she only had herself and the gun-toting Rufus. So, she was given dossiers on potential recruits...this Shieldmaiden being the one that stood out to her. But on her way to The Vasty Deep, she had noticed an advertisement for another potential super-group forming...with a name that was familiar to her from her old world. She hadn't really considered whether or not she'd join, but it was definitely worth investigating.
"I'm just trying to make some friends," she said to Rufus, but was actually just convincing herself. "If we're gonna do this detective thing, we need all the help we can get."
"Sure," Rufus responded, not buying it. "Just get in, hear 'em out, then let's get back to the job. I'll meet you in Costa del Sol."
"Got it."
The line went quiet as Blink climbed to the top of a small hill. From here, she could see the dock behind her, and the tower in front of her. She was a bit nervous...the last time she had dealt with this many Primes, she was fighting for her life in Dante's Abyss, watching friends die all around her. Hopefully this would be less bloody. With a flash of green energy in her fingertips, she formed a small portal underneath and disappeared into it.
On the other side, she landed on a small balcony. She was just outside of a window, which was conveniently left cracked open. She squatted down, one of her long ears up against the parted glass pane. She couldn't see all of the bodies in the room, but she counted at least two shadows on the ground. "My name is Hal Jordan," one of them was saying. "I used to be a Green Lantern."
Claire leaned up against the outside wall of the tower, and listened.
