The two women left the elevator behind as they progressed. A sign painted on the wall indicated that pharmaceuticals was further in, and the two quietly padded along the corridor.
The lights, unlike those elsewhere in the hospital, did not turn on as they progressed. For the first hundred metres or so, they relied on the light of Carmelita’s shock pistol to illuminate the area, but as they got closer to the lab a faint violet light began to diffuse the corridor.
There was no obvious source, and there were no shadows cast. Carmelita and Amber shared a look before adjusting their weapons and continuing to pad down the corridor.
Suddenly, they heard the screams of the ghouls once more, and spun to face them. Shifting shapes in the darkness around the elevator probed towards them, but every time one of them entered the violet glow they would scream and back away into the darkness, scratching at their skin.
“It seems there is some countermeasure down here after all,” Carmelita said, hoisting the barrel of her shock pistol over her shoulder. “Hopefully we can find a cure for you as well as the ghouls down here.”
Amber nodded, but glanced worriedly towards the shifting shapes in the dark.
“So how are we going to get out of here if they’re blocking the exit?”
Carmelita shrugged, and the faunus sighed.
“Guess we’ll work that out later,” she said, hoisting her blade in her raw hands with a wince. “Let’s go.”
The two turned and headed deeper into the basement.
