[2-8] The Campground
#14
"Nothing but a bunch of old papers. Activity lists, weekly menus, 'Camp Talent Show Singalong Lollapa-Loon-za.' " Barry closed the desk drawer and sighed. "Anything useful is long gone, probably along with the stuff that was in the rest of the cabins." The Syntech bartender looked around the dusty, disused office, Hiro's multipurpose goggles shining a bright white LED around the interior of the main building.

"Not entirely, Barry." The hacker responded, shaking the two long, thin sticks he'd found in a supply closet. Apparently one of the camp activities had been making your own fishing poles, and Barry had almost gotten hooked when he tripped over a half deflated t soccer ball while looking for a light switch. These two were perfectly serviceable, and with their large bonfire having produced a serviceable amount of red hot cooking coals, Hiro was hoping to pull something succulent and delicious out of the lake. Beef jerky and introspection only got you so far.

Eyeing the faded posters that gave the name of their current abode as "Camp Crested Loon", Hiro followed Barry back out into the still night. There were no suitable beds anywhere to be found, so the two had decided that a combination of restful loafing, occasional naps in shifts, and low effort activity would have to sustain them until they could continue onwards when it got light out again. Which led to Hiro standing on the shoreline, his fishing pole baited with a bit of dried apple that Barry had found a packet of.

The night wore on, Hiro casting, reeling, waiting, then casting again. The secondary alternated between napping close to Hiro, tending the fire, bumming cigarettes, and staring up at the sky, trying in vain to match the stars to the ones on the pages he'd taken from the lighthouse. Hiro finally gave up about an hour and a half into it, and not five minutes later Barry had walked back to the fire with the largest bass Hiro had ever seen.

Stomachs full of roasted fish and brackish water, the samurai and the server sat around their cheery, roaring bonfire. Waiting for the dark to lift, for what little sun there had been to cut through the clouds, filter through the mist, and ask those people still alive, 'Have you passed through this night?'
