The Flight
#24
[spoiler]

Quote:Staging Area

As the light of the machine died down, I found myself standing on one end of an expansive hallway, milling about in it were a number of different people, some wore ridiculously expensive suits while others looked significantly more combat ready. The group nearest to me were centered around a mustachioed man, who was engrossed in interrogating a hapless child in front of a cameraman. That must be what the media forms were for.

I had no desire to stand in the spotlight though, even if my signature gave them the right to film and broadcast me, they'll have to take note of me first to do that. I shoved my hands in my pockets, ever so slightly hunched my back, and slinked away while the paparazzi were still occupied. I was confident I looked nondescript enough to evade anyone's attention, after all what was one scrawny teen compared to the myriad of uniquely interesting characters. The cafe alone was currently serving no less than two anthropomorphic animals, one garishly colored individual, possibly either an alien or a hyper-advanced robot, and one rotting corpse.

Well, I would've been just fine with believing the revolting thing  occupying one of the tables, and releasing the most god-awful smell I've ever had the misfortune to process, to be a freshly dug up cadaver. Alas, it moved too much to be one. Maybe it was some sort of reanimated warrior? It definitely looked the part, adorned as it was in full body armor that looked as corroded and foul as the naked head sprouting from between its pauldrons. I resolved to refrain from standing in the way of that abomination.

I didn't get to loiter around for long, before the very man who invited us here appeared before us.

From what I'd gathered, Karl Jak was a very rich and powerful prime. There's now no doubt in my mind that describing Mr. Jak as "wealthy", is as much of an understatement as calling a hurricane "windy", or the frozen deserts of Antarctica "chilly".

The scope of the man's immeasurable wealth hadn't really set in until I personally walked up the red-carpeted stairs to the absolutely massive plane he'd prepared for a journey into the verse he laid exclusive rights to. And what a feat that was, his company actually owned an entire verse? How is that even possible?

Opulent doesn't even begin to describe this marvel of engineering. The luxurious leather seat that comfortably hugged my body as I reclined in it, and the sweet taste of aromatic coffee as it massaged my taste buds weren't even the tip of the iceberg. I set down the delicate china and craned my neck to cast a glance at the aisle behind me. Pretty attendants pushed trolleys laden with doubtlessly expensive foods and drinks to patiently waiting passengers; if it weren't for the windows giving me a view of the gray clouds and distant flashing lightning outside, I could've sworn I was in a seven star restaurant.

The pilot had announced at the start of their flight that it wouldn't take more than a few hours for them to reach their destination. I was feeling particularly content right now, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to have myself a little nap.

My thoughts drifted aimlessly as my eyelids lazily drifted to a close, the crashing of thunder the last sound I heard before drifting into a deep sleep.
