The undead comedian swept his skeletal hand up to his forehead, wiping away the sweat that had formed. He remained hunched over in the middle of the long, golden hallway, his breathing hoarse. His entire body felt like he had waded through jelly for hours on end as his hands touched the ground, golden glitter dancing through the air as they floated to the ground. He coughed, the particles filling his metaphorical lungs as he softly fell onto his front and rolled onto his back.
He set the back of his skull on the ground, every bone in his body aching. He sensed footsteps echo from his side; the marching of an oncoming giant stomping through the land it claimed as its own. He did not bother trying to lift his head off of the ground, for even that tiny bit of effort would have been a waste.
He remained still and silent as the woman walked towards his prone form, her heels clicking against the stone ground as she drew closer. She pointed her rapier at his smiling cranium, her blade glinting in the sunlight as she stood over the revenant, breathing lightly.
“ugh… that being said…” the skeleton said, keeping his casual smile planted on his face even as the woman bore the sword closer to his face, “you really like swinging that thing around, huh?”
The portly comedian laughed. He laughed like he had just uttered the world’s best joke, confusing his would-be killer. Eventually, his laughter drew to a close, becoming nothing more than a half-hearted chuckle before ceasing entirely. He closed his eyes, as if waiting for death.
The girl grinned, satisfied with this turn of events. She brought up her rapier, starting to stab it down towards his head.
“listen…” he said, opening his eyes. The heiress’ sword stopped short of his skull, as if some magical force had froze it to the spot. The two locked eyes, the skeleton briefly looking towards her cheek, still wet from the tear she had shed. She noticed that whatever sense of goofiness he had in them had disappeared in a single blink; it was now nothing more than a pair of glowing globes peering out of a black void.
“i know you didn’t answer me before, but…” he croaked, “somewhere in there… i can feel it...there’s a glimmer of a good person inside you.”
The woman raised her eyebrow, a look of confusion on her face as he continued.
“the memory of someone who once wanted to do the right thing. someone who, in another time, might have even been.... a friend?”
That last word struck her like a bullet to the heart. She stepped back, allowing Sans to stand up. He continued speaking, slowly walking towards her even as she moved away from him. He no longer sounded like the boastful combatant he had been moments before. Instead, he was pleading, with hands outstretched and in a motion for a hug, and he still had the goofy smile on his face despite literally pouring his heart out.
“c’mon, buddy, do you remember me? please, if you’re listening… let’s forget all of this, ok? just… lay down your weapon, and... “ he said, tenderly reaching for her blade as they both stopped moving, “well, my job will be a lot easier.”
The comedian kept staring directly into the woman’s eyes, as if piercing her very soul. The white-clothed girl stood in silence, her face showcasing a wide display of emotions. At first, her eyebrows were raised, completely flabbergasted. Then, he saw her face soften, her smile deforming. Then, tears started to form in her eyes and stream down her face, and he swore he heard her whimper at least once. His hand shook as it inched closer and closer to his opponent’s blade. What he was doing to her… he almost felt bad for her. Almost.
His glowing pupils glanced down towards her hand as they tightened around the hilt of her weapon, her knuckles white and her hand clenching and unclenching almost by instinct. He lowered his head, closing his eyes for a single moment before looking back up at her, silently begging. His smile seemed to go away for a split second as he sighed.
He lept backwards, barely avoiding the blade as it sliced through the air where his head had been. He landed on his feet, planting his hands inside his pockets as two large, canine skulls appeared behind him. The lady stood, rooted to her spot and her hands shaking.
“welp… it was worth a shot. Guess you like doing things the hard way, huh?”
Don’t listen to him… the voice in her head said as the skulls began to glow, energy forming within their mouths.
