>> Todd: Realize you forgot something
Sitting bolt upright, Todd was reminded of the fact that he'd forgotten to pay his bet by the aggressive-sounding alert that just popped up in his info feed. He nearly capsized his hoverchair as he scrambled to get to his computer and halt the intrusion. If these guys didn't get their money, they'd get it other ways.
Fortunately the budding black marketer's proxy server handled the load of the relatively primative DDoS attack that had been targeted at his system, and he was able to isolate and neutralize the hacker's virus as its diversion was sucked away and dealt with on a separate server.
Todd swiped aside his holokeyboard, revealing a flat surface littered with holoprojections of stats on the attack. He'd heard about these smoke screen-esqe attacks on several larger-scale servers, where a large but weak general attack was made to clog up servers and conceal a more direct and focused hack, which targeted the more important files on a server, be them industrial secrets or his activity logs, which would get him locked up in an Imperial prison in a heartbeat, or eliminated as a threat to the empire.
He shook his head, clearing it and getting back to the virus at hand. He manipulated the holoprojecton of the virus, digital code turned into a facsimile of a living object for ease of viewing. Todd picked apart the holovirus piece by piece, pulling parts of its code guts out and glancing over them, looking for the trademarks of any of the empire's comissioned hackers, or any of his competitors in the black market and betting rings. Not noting any immediately, he plucked the hologram up and stuck it in a holographic slot on the surface, for further examination.
With one emergency neutralized, Todd payed up on his bet along with some extra as a late fee. Relaxing backwards once more, he hoped to get a least a little shuteye before the bustle of his little world started up again.
