For a few moments, all the skeleton could do was stand on top of the giant goat skull, his eyes the size of pinpricks as the grey zombie man flew towards him. He was speechless even as his life seemed to flash before his eyes.
Then, just as the undead behemoth smashed into the large animal skull, shattering it into a gazillion pieces, he jumped.
He was fairly high up, definitely enough to had prevented the super soldier from attacking him with his now limited arsenal, but it now served as a death sentence as he started to drift through the air, slowly descending.
For a moment, he was content with his fate.
Then he glanced towards the portal. The orange swirls barely masked the rectangular brown explosives placed on its supports, ready to explode when needed. He had seen the green soldier swipe something from the ground, and it only took a moment for him to draw the connection.
He could not let it explode. After years followed by decades of aimless wandering, of holding up a smile just to get through a life where nothing mattered in the end. After all that… he was in control. For the first time ever, he could change everything. Nothing was stopping him this time. Not the soldier, not his cracked ribs, not his injured leg, nothing. Not even the fact he was falling to his death as he mused about all of this.
Filled with a feeling he had never thought he’d feel again, he swept his hand behind him, magically pulling a long piece of bone from the remains of the goat skull. His left eye switched to a yellow color as he slid the bone piece under his feet like a skateboard. Just as quickly, he summoned an array of five bones, each tilted in an incline that pointed towards the blades of the helicopter. He let out a grunt as his makeshift board landed on the first of the set, pain shooting up his burned leg as he swiftly slid down the hill of bones. Reaching the end, he promptly leapt off of his board, the bones behind him disappearing as he plummeted towards the helicopter blades. Holding his hands out, he gripped the side of one of the giant blades, the force causing them to move. He held on as he was lifted into the air at a large angle, finally letting go close to the ground.
The momentum he had accumulated in his little ride was used to pretty good effect as he shot towards Flynn Taggart. The Doomguy let out a surprised yelp as the blue-hoodied monster slammed into his chest, sending both careening towards the portal.
They both landed just short of the blackened hole that was the portal’s entrance, the security guard having the fortune of landing on top of the crazed marine. Ketchup oozed from the cracks in the guard’s rib cage as he rolled off of him, narrowly avoiding the serrated teeth of his chainsaw. He quickly bolted away from him, charging towards the detonator with the green marine in hot pursuit. His seared leg turned what would normally be an almost inhuman sprint into a light run as he drew closer and closer to the detonator, the sound of the chainsaw’s engine closing in on him.
Just as the sound became almost unbearably loud, he reached his hand out, the detonator turning blue as it flew to his hands. Without a moment to spare, he hopped forward as the serrated teeth sliced towards his arm. Blood exploded out of his arm as it was removed from his body. He landed on his face, barely standing up as he held the detonator to the sky, speaking.
“One more step and I toss this thing off the roof...” He said, his voice quiet and, surprisingly, devoid of pain. He did not seem to pay attention to the severed arm at his side, the stump dripping blood.
The Doomguy stopped moving, the chainsaw’s engine echoing around the now almost entirely silent rooftop. Despite the massive weapon in his hand, it was clear the entire battle was taking its toll on him. His previously invincible form was now bleeding out of almost every injury on his body, and his breathing was clearly labored. His armor was torn to shreds alongside his body, and he was even having a hard time holding up his beloved chainsaw. As he breathed, he spoke softly, as if trying to conserve whatever energy he had left.
“Go…. fuck yourself... bonehead. Don’t…..got time for this,” he replied, slowly raising his bloodied melee weapon for another blow.
“why are you doing this?” Sans whispered, his free arm still clutching the detonator, ready to throw it.
“Already told you. You know…. all that…. lone survivor stuff?” He said, almost buckling underneath the weight of his own weapon, “That portal is... a direct threat to... everyone here, and I intend to stop what happened from…. happening here, capiche?” He said, pausing for a few moments to allow it to sink in.
For what felt like hours, the skeleton allowed what he said to surge through his mind, his glowing eyes looking solemnly towards the ground. Yes, he knew exactly what it was like. Yes, he had constantly thought about what he would’ve done if he only had any control of what was going on. He knew it personally. He lived it. And as much as he didn’t want to admit it, maybe this man… knew it too.
This demonic, crazy, bloodthirsty human… might know it too.
He had to take the chance.
“why do you think i’m doing this, mister flynn…” he said, closing his eyes.
“What?” He replied, his chainsaw turning off.
“everything i’ve done since you arrived was to stop you from destroying this portal, flynn. up until today, i was kinda, ya know… drifting. i only took this job because it was easy and, for the most part, not exactly a thinking job, ya know?”
“then they came through the portal. my friends and my brother, who you killed. it’s because of that i’m still here, fighting you this way, taggart. this portal…” He continued, nodding towards the portal as his severed arm started to become wracked with pain, “it houses them. all of them.”
“What are you-”
“listen to me, please! my people are in there. all of them. they’re trapped in a place they can’t escape from. and at some point, a human is going to go down there and slaughter them. every single one.” He said, his voice turning desperate and close to tears, “if i don’t get them out, they’re going to die! i can’t let it happen! not while i can save them…”
He opened his eyes, sniffling slightly as he looked up towards the adult human. His face unobscured, he saw… a look of sympathy? It must’ve been working!
“human… i don’t know what happened to you, but you must believe me. that portal is the only thing that can save my people. please… just..” He pleaded, lowering his arm. As he did this, a large goat skull noiselessly materialized from behind the marine.
“just… put down the weapon… and we can stop this. we can end his here…”
Without a word… the marine thrust his hand towards the starter switch, revving up his chainsaw.
“I’m not listening to your fake shit sob story. I got a mission to fulfill.”
of course… Sans thought, his left eye switching from light blue to yellow as the goat skull fired. A white beam struck the Doomguy in the back, sending him forward as the skeleton sidestepped past him. As he landed, a second skull appeared a few feet above him alongside around three bones. Sans leaped into the air, landing on top of the skull, his eyes completely black. The detonator remained clutched in his hand.
“let it be known… i’m not the demon here. You are.”
And with that, the battle recommenced. The skeleton’s eyes switched from black to blue, the skull shaking as the echo of its reverberating blast pierced the sky and as the bones flew down towards the marine. The others, whom had been observing the whole exchange, charged into the fray. The silver-plated space marine raised his chainsword, letting out a loud battle cry alongside Somerled, whose fists were crackling with electricity. Despite his massive injuries, the Doomguy stood up, exhausted and beaten and burned and stabbed and many other things, and revved up his chainsaw. He whirled around, the chainsaw demolishing the Blaster skull.
He let in a deep breath, holding the chainsaw out towards his oncoming enemies. This was it.
This was the end.
