Karkat has a great feeling about this. You know, the last time a certain someone, who shall remain nameless at this time, ‘freed’ something that seemed friendly, it ended up destroying an entire universe. In recent memory, that is. Give it a while in this new world, he’s sure some other asshole will come around to fuck shit up. Lost in thought, the Cancer mutters to himself. He doesn’t even notice when he begins lag behind the rest of the group, lost in thought and frustration. It’s almost too late, as the inevitable separation dawns on him and he begins to sprint after his companions.
“Hey guys! Hold your damn hoofbeasts for a sec-”
And then, his world begins to pitch and sway and heave. It was as if someone decided that the spin cycle was necessary to scrub the stain away that was his pathetic excuse for an existence. The brave Knight of Blood loses his footing and winds up on his hands and knees, barely sentient and copacetic. The newly summoned claw-scythe lands in the powder with a pff. He favors his left side, clutching at an old wound in his gut with one hand, and the scars that Gamzee’s teeth had left in his neck with the other. Despite the blistering cold, sweat beads down his temple. He opens his mouth to shout an expletive, but no swears will come like they so often did before. Finding the strength to crane his head, Kar turned his gaze back in the direction that they had walked from, back towards the Nexus Gate. His heart raced, pulse quickened.
Something God-Awful has happened. A Multiversal bond has been severed, a light snuffed. It was if one coil of a light bulb had been burned out, causing the other to overload and pop.
Suppose that’s just another perk to being Moirails. Right, best-bro?
His breath little more than a wheeze, Karkat forces himself to a wobbly standing position. He leans down and tentatively equips his ClawScythe thingy. Gingerly, he takes a few steps forward. He hasn’t eaten snow yet, so he decides to chance a brisk walk, hoping to catch up to the fast disappearing silhouettes, who are veiled in snowy flurries.
---
When the normally shouty alien regroups with the rest of the band of adventurers, he is noticeably less audible. No indignant shouts about being left behind momentarily. No crude, well thought out insults about the gullible nature of present company. No loose barrage of profanities about the sub-zero temperatures.
He just trudges on, look of separation and detachment and so many other whirl-plooling emotions barely hidden just beneath a plastered-on mask of “I’m okay.”
