There's Snow Place Like Home
#15
From the distance, somewhere far from the tower, there was a sound. So far in fact that those that heard it could not immediately identify its direction. Heads swiveled and sentences fell short as the party of adventurers searched for the source.

It seemed to be a thin, aimless tweeting, as though a flutist had gone mad somewhere in the white tundra. Shrill highs were soon met with trembling lows, and any that was familiar with music might make note of the instrument’s amazing range. Slowly, the tittering-rambling piping grew louder, and louder again until it could no longer something which could be dismissed as some distant nuisance.

Soon the trilling of the pipe could be heard at a deafening pitch, and yet still no source could be found. From nowhere and from everywhere it seemed to echo, and as soon as you were sure that it came from either this way or that, you were equally sure that it wasn’t.

As quickly as the sound had appeared, it faded away, leaving those who had heard it bewildered and befuddled.

Only after they had a moment to recuperate did they notice the viscous writing that wound over the ground in thick, transparent, rust-colored slime. The letters slopped and dribbled from the floor of the tower, out into the cold of the Fields, turned sharply, and pointed outwards before trailing away. None had ever seen the language before, but somehow, they knew its meaning:

FREE ME.
