Riding the Worm
#1
Dune. Arrakis. Or as close as Paul would get to it. His lungs sucked in the dry desert air and his soul was at peace with himself. Gurney, ever the attentive friend, had traveled  this far with him and he had been joined recently by the Atreides swordmaster- Duncan Idaho. The two stood some distance back as Paul completed a sort of informal ritual of returning to the desert- he never knew he’d missed this place so much. He was as a fish returning to the seas of Calidan- the silky sand slipping under his feet in a welcoming gesture.

“Are you alright master Paul?”

“Yes Gurney, very much so.”

“Shall we continue then?” He pressed, Paul rejoining his two friends.

“Yes. Let us.” Paul agreed and turned from them once again to survey the sandscape before them.

“Where... exactly... might that be Paul?” Duncan asked, a little quizzically. Gurney shot the much younger swordmaster a glance but Duncan just folded his arm and set his hips. The two did this dance often and it did Paul’s heart good to see it once again; having lost Duncan to sardukar, the swordmaster sacrificing himself to afford Paul and his mother time to escape.

“Where the sands will take us Duncan. Wherever our path will lead- it is where we will need to be.”

That was a very un-Fremen thing to say. Wandering without purpose on Arrakis would have been effective suicide- a method they used for capital punishment. Put this world was not near as hot or foreboding. If Dune was torture to the body, this was a lightly skinned knee. The temperature, at least here, was nowhere near as hot, and he could even see scraggly vegetation hartley clinging to life around the occasional rocky outcropping.

“I think it would be best, master Paul, if we formulated a-” Gurney began but the Duke cut him off.

“It matters not where we go... now we have desert power.” Paul said distantly, a great plume of sand erupting into the air several miles away in the open desert.

“Is that a spice blow?” Duncan gasped and Paul flashed him a smile.

“Yes Duncan... and it is our ride.”

Paul wasn't sure if he had summoned it or if it was a part of this world already... but where there was a spice blow- there was a worm.
