Plop.
Mickey would never get used to teleporting. Especially given that the Omniverse didn’t have a surefire way of making sure he would land on his feet, which meant he often found himself crashing to the ground in a little heap. Someone would be hard-pressed to call the Nexus a soft landing zone, too.
Rolling over onto his back, the mouse groaned a little from the impact. He pressed a gloved hand to his forehead, his big ears ringing like Quasimodo’s bells.
The Nexus. How long had it been since he’d been in this place? Before the sack of Nippur, that much was certain. The place served as a sort of cross-roads between the verses—some of which he hadn’t even laid eyes on yet—and yet he’d spent so little time here. Lengthy amounts of his journey had taken place in several of the different major verses, whether he was fighting off the Empire’s troops in Coruscant, trudging through the forest in the Tangled Green, exacting justice with his best friend in the Endless Dunes, or helping the people of Bree in Camelot.
The vast white nothingness that made up this centralized hub, though, would never be to his liking. It was too flat, too boring, and by most accounts, much too violent. He’d only been here for minutes and already he’d spotted a collection of devious looking primes gathering together in this distance. Among them, Mickey recognized Sinestro, one of the leaders of LAW he’d fought alongside in the Battle of Nippur, and the suited agent who’d given he and Belle trouble early in the quest for Teucer’s relics.
Staying away from them seemed like the most advantageous path. Whatever they were up to, it didn’t look fun and didn’t look like anything the mouse would enjoy, especially after spending days locked in an unnecessary bloodbath for some pieces of armor.
He couldn’t leave without Blues, though. Where the heck was the kid, anyway?
He remembered watching the preteen machine stalk up the steps into Teucer’s temple, and then he’d returned his focus to Belle to say good-bye before they got swept away. A quick glance around him showed that the redheaded girl and his armored friend were nowhere to be found. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the small corner of Play, Boy he’d ripped off and gotten Belle to write her address on.
With a shiver, he stuffed it back into his pocket. Ugh, he could hardly even look at it anymore. Doubts swirled within his head about the survival guide—if it was even that at all. Had he been wrong all along? Had Belle been correct when she’d said it was some sort of dirty magazine meant for all sorts of unsavory things? What would that even involve, anyway? He had so many questions and so few answers, but his friend had disappeared from his side and would be unable to oblige him.
Perhaps, he thought, he should make his way to Coruscant and find Belle, and ask her all of these things about Play, Boy. Honestly, though, the mouse didn’t know if he even wanted to know.
He wasn’t even sure if he wanted to think about Teucer or the place he’d abducted them to ever again. In fact, all he wanted to think about now was getting back to Minnie and going home. He glanced in the direction of the gate to the Tangled Green and was surprised to find another contingency of primes and secondaries gathered together not far off. They all looked pretty similar to the citizens of Ambrosia he’d met during his brief stay there. Was Guu with them?
From a brief scan, it appeared that yes, the princess had accompanied her people on their huge trip to the Nexus. She stood not incredibly far off from the mouse, talking with… oh gosh, the King swallowed nervously, It’s the guy that killed me in Dante’s Abyss. His nerves were on edge. The hulking man seemed cordial enough speaking with Guu, but… well, Mickey couldn’t possibly be sure.
Just stay calm. Maybe he won’t see you.
And then, he saw her.
The mouse screeched in excitement. “MIREYA! MIREYA, OVER HERE!”
So much for staying calm. Suddenly unphased by possible impending danger, Mickey Mouse broke into a sprint and waved his arms wildly, happy to see a friend.
