This is a fun thread.
When I originally joined as Proto Man, I had planned to make him far more 'gray'/jaded than he wound up being. Too much of the Protomen and The Megas (this was before HR: Red was an album as well). My backstory is a fusion of the 'canon' (you ever talk to me, you'll understand how laughable I find 'Mega Man canon') and bits from the Megas. In writing my history, I tried to blur the lines of what was good and evil, especially with Dr. Wily, who Proto Man actually respects and likes more than Dr. Light (who he kinda detests).
So yea, I was originally going for more of a chaotic neutral experience, but I wound up creating something closer to John Cena. What was supposed to be a morally gray individual wound up being in the white side of an extremely black-white spectrum, and I think it's the lack of gray that defines Proto Man. Sure, he's a machine capable of wrecking anything, but he's also a naive child. He sees good and evil. He doesn't want to hurt people. He thinks most people are good until they show otherwise, and once they wreck that, they're villains that need to be dealt with.
I think that a lot of what I originally intended for Proto Man will wind up with A17.
As for Shang, I started out having zero idea what I wanted to do with the character. I just wanted a different experience other than Proto, and I thought the Moors were an untapped wealth of ideas. There was one point (and you can see the groundwork for this a little bit in my first thread) where I considered making Shang into a Jack the Ripper-esque serial killer. I've said this before, but it really wasn't until Atelos started writing that I found any real direction. The ability to play-off another motivated the more grandiose concepts out of Shang.
