When the stranger stepped through the portal, it was the emptiness that stunned him. The absence of the sun, the lack of blistering sand or chapping wind. It felt hollow to be within such a neutral pallet. Not only that, but he felt somehow guilty for leaving the Dunes behind, as though he had abandoned his homeland yet again.
He would return soon, he assured himself, and focused again on the importance of his task. Not a trace of the Babylonian bloodline could be left alive, or he risked losing all that he had worked for. Chaos lies waiting in lethargy.
He pulled his tan hood down over his face, fearful of being recognized amid the wandering herd of faces. His beggar's garbs had been enough to conceal him in Nippur so there was little chance that he would be spotted here, but the possibility still nagged at him.
Near the center of the endless plain of white, a small group seemed to be gathering. Likely treasure hunters, or allies to the man that the New Babylon leader had wronged. It was both a blessing and a curse that so many had conviened.
The stranger stalked along the outskirts of the fountain, his thick layers of wrapped linen shielding him from any prying eyes.
He searched the landscape and waited.
