-CRACK-
The undead colossus' grip tightened around the marine as he tried to force himself free. Grass-green ceramic plates and grey kevlar weave slowly cracked and ripped under Grundy's brute strength, as the fight around the two turned to a complete standstill.
"LITTLE MAN LISTEN?", the zombie shouted in the marine's face as he pinned him against the dull grey wall. "GRUNDY STILL NEED TO FINISH HIS HAM. GRUNDY IS VERY BUSY MAN."
"Shove it up your a-", the marine's response was cut off by another blow to the head.
"ANSWER."
Doomguy chuckled to himself between wheezing breaths. "Know what, lughead? Sure. Just hear me out first. And make you remember it."
"WHAT?", Grundy said, an eyebrow raised in curiosity.
"Don't turn your back on a man holding a high explosive."
Before he could begin to form another sentence, the undead recognized a single, near-incomprehensible noise. The marine had dropped something. A dangerous, volatile, explosive something.
-BOOM-
In a moment, Solomon Grundy was blown headfirst into the sleek fiberglass paneling of the room as his target ran into the stairwell, throwing a bundle of smoke grenades behind him for good measure.
Underneath his helmet, Tartaros' stony expression slowly twisted into a half-smile. Today was going to be more than he bargained for. Probably above his paygrade too. He really should see about a raise sometime.
The Astartes followed the rest of the group in pursuit through the fog, splitting into groups searching for the intruder. Finding himself with a strange hammer-wielding man and another hooded and stockier looking undead. They followed the trail of explosions and yelling in the distance, ascending towards the offices, and above that, the research center. The intruder's goal seemed all but obvious now. Some hired goon? Random thug with a deathwish? In any case, they were after something specific.
Bursting out of the stairwell, Tartaros was met with a hail of lead and fire zooming past his arm. Leaping back, he issued a single command to his fellows. "Stay behind. If anyone's getting their ass beat here, it best be me."
Readying himself, he charged through the storm of firepower as best he could, and sought cover behind one of Mr. Stark's prized display statues. His target didn't seem to have a taste for the arts however, as he continued spraying rounds past Tartaros. The ex-marine laughed to himself quietly as he pulled a barrage of his own. Though he would never admit it, he had been waiting for a situation like this.
Gripping a belt of cluster bombs in one hand and attaching his flamer to the other, Tartaros bounded towards Doomguy, spraying arcs of flame and tossing bombs towards his target like a hive ganger hopped up on Frenzon. The crackling flames spreading across the room and the thunderous roar of explosive rounds forced the intruder back as Tartaros bounded down the hall, casting aside his ragged cloak, and drawing his chainblade and Serpenta once again.
The first strike was swift and surgical, slashing at the USSMC soldier's bloodied torso, cutting into his rib cage as a beam of concentrated heat energy narrowly missed his head. The man responded in kind, spraying a burst of chaingun rounds right into Tartaros' shoulder. Rasping, the ex-marine limped forward, warm drops of blood trickling down his bare right hand and onto his chainsword.
"Hah... That was a rush and a half. Though I'm afraid it's only just begun though, boy. You've got yourself in some deep shit, and it's only going to get worse."
"Oh will you shut the fuck with this "boy" shit? Just keep fighting, tinhead.", Doomguy grumbled, as he slung his chaingun onto his back.
"Suit yourself.", Tartaros sighed.
As the Doomguy readied his shotgun for another round, he was met with a firm blow to the jaw. However the marine seemed relatively unfazed, blasting at Tartaros' legs before smacking him in the temple with the butt of his gun, knocking the ex-marine backwards across the ash-stained tile floor. As quickly as he was knocked down, Tartaros scrambled back onto his feet, and slashed again with his chainsword. This was met only with another blast, and lead shrapnel embedding itself in the ex-marine's greaves.
Tartaros took a step backwards, lining up the sights of his Volkite pistol and pulling a trigger. Another crackling orange beam shot through the air, burning into Doomguy's arm and drawing blood from the half-cauterized wound as the marine seethed through his teeth.
The soldier's response was just as brutal. Unloading another cartridge towards Tartaros, Doomguy swore under his breath before setting off around the room at a startling pace. He strafed around the room, leaving a rain of bullets in his wake. The wandering old man desperately dodged and weaved through the burning corridor, attempting to avoid the torrent that came his way, but it was no use. Shots blew out of the shotgun's barrel with a loud bang, tearing his skin and burying themselves in his right arm.
Tartaros growled in pain, as more blood seeped onto his skin, staining his arm a deep crimson. He ran towards the intruder, his blade humming softly, contrasting the appearance of its blood-soaked teeth. The ex-marine swung again violently, tearing through the muscle of his target's leg. Trying to ignore the pain, grinning underneath his stone-grey helmet, the Doomguy fired another shot, blasting Tartaros onto the floor. The marine pulled out his chainsaw, just about ready to finish the job... But just as the growl of its engines began to cut through the silence, the other group burst into the hall.
Bleached white bones flew across the room like javelins, materializing from thin air as the rest of the group closed in. Doomguy growled in frustration and revved his chainsaw violently, sending the whirling steel teeth into action in a matter of moments. The marine began his slaughter, shoving the whirring teeth of his weapon into Tartaros' torso, before charging headfirst into the hammer-wielding Somerled, tossing live grenades around the burning room like so much handfuls of sand.
The ex-marine grumbled and slowly stumbled back onto his feet. There was a burning feeling as thick, crimson blood poured out of a ragged gash in his ceramite chestplate. The bastard's pretty clever, I'll give him that much, he thought to himself, But he's not getting away that easily. Not at fuckin' all.
Tartaros coughed up a drip of blood as he readied an axe and his trusted bolter, ready to head back into the fray. As he said, this was only the beginning.
