Grass rustled violently all around Somerled as he walked. Vague shapes parted the prairie, stalking him at a distance just out of the reach of his whip. Despite what, to the average human, could be considered imminent death milling about him, the monster just trudged forward. He kept general tabs on the locations of all the little critters circling him, but it wasn’t really useful information. They’d just jump out all at once anyway.
A flash of fur sped past, much closer than they usually came, but it too got out of reach before he could so much as look at it angrily. His little adversary hadn’t neglected to warn his comrades about the monster. They were pretty determined to bring him down, however. His stomach growled with that insatiable tone. One of them would have to get close to him. Eventually...
Despite the simmering blood in his veins, Somerled feigned disinterest. They wouldn’t bother coming any closer if he raged at them, a cornered rat is the most dangerous, after all. At the same time, even though it would be the most tempting to the wolf pack, he hadn’t the foggiest idea how he was supposed to act scared. All his life, he’d terrified humans, with every technique and movement, he knew how to instill absolute fear. He was capable of mimicking every single emotion and posture down to a T. Each and every one save for fear.
Fear was a useful emotion. A nice little physical boost in the form of adrenaline to help you either punch the fuck out of whatever was threatening you, or run away screaming. Its posturing required that adrenaline, pumping everything up to fight or flee. He just couldn’t mimic a biological response like that.
Perhaps the wolves circling him sensed that, with their silly little noses or whatever. No adrenaline, no fear. Even though they held the supposed advantage, why was their prey not trembling in terror right about now? They probably should have listened to that little warning sign.
The pack exploded into a frenzy of barking and braying suddenly. A grey blur rocketed out of the grasses left of Somerled, lunging up at him, mouth wide open. Letting out a scream of rage himself, the monster grabbed the canine by the upper jaw, with no regard for the safety of his hand, and slammed it into the ground with a massive, sickening crunch. The remaining figures, which had been flying in for the coordinated kill, immediately took off in all directions, their plan completely obliterated when they realized their prey was literally a monster.
Yelps and whimpers came from the unlucky beast, most of its bones likely turned to dust with that smash. The monster’s glance shot between the retreating figures, and that of the unfortunate wolf. Its friends had fucked off, and with no hesitation, he dropped to the ground and started on breakfast.
