Near to the back of the bus sat Jade Harley, her head lightly nodding as the vehicle sped across the Nexus ground. She slipped in and out of sleep— that summer had been an exciting one, full of late, hazy nights and fireflies, and it all seemed to come piling back onto her with the first day back at school.
The year before Jade had conceived the brilliantly bright idea to try and bring her poor old dog Becquerel to school with her, cleverly disguised as a student of course. This experiment had met with rousing success; no one suspected that the odd, hairy kid who occasionally barked and only wore trench-coats and low fedoras was actually a dog. In fact, the experiment had worked a little too well, starting with when Bec managed to steal Jade's spot on the football team right out from under her nose while also earning an honorable seat amongst Jade's usual crowd.
But this year there would be no football, and certainly no "Jade's weird cousin from Scandinavia". Biting other players and threatening to castrate them with the machete in her locker if they touched her butt one more time was not stellar sportsmanship, as she had been continually reminded. The argument from her grandpa about junior high being "a real jungle" hadn't helped her case any.
So here she was, two triangular-cut pickle and mustard sandwiches in a paper sack for lunch and a mysterious lack of weaponry in her backpack. This school year was definitely going to be different.
