Retane looked on as there was a strong look of determination in the Winter Spirit's eyes. Jack Frost was resilient and stubborn even in the face of adversity. The Namekian shifted his eyes as a flash of lightning lit up the sky. Airyonna and Alaina looked on and waiting to see what would happen next. Reatus, Krosst and Dante huddled close together under a tree. Their eyes showed mixed emotions. They had never seen a fight of such intensity before, escpecially between to comrades.
The Namekian charged at the Guardian of the Horsemen as the pole-ax formed in his hand. Jack Frost followed suit, both warriors letting their weapons trail behind them. The Leader of the Horsemen leapt into the air as they neared each other and brought the blade down to strike at his target. Jack wasn't having it and with a tap of Savior, the ground solidified into ice. Retane hadn't foreseen the tactic and realized he had screwed up. Jack Frost slid out of the way with ease as the wicked blade shattered the ice and penetrated the soil.
Retane had seen the ice ball forming in Savior's maw once again, and used the ice to his advantage. The momentum of his strike allowed him to spin away and yank the glaive from the ground, putting distance between the two. Jack lashed out sending the ball of ice in Retane's direction. The Emerald Warrior leapt to the side but he was too slow and felt the ice penetrate his calf. as he tumbled to the ground. He looked behind him to see Jack Frost leaping into the air himself charging another ball of ballistic ice.
Almost as if his instincts kicked in, the Namekian raised the pole-ax up in defense and slammed the butt of the handle into the ground before rolling away.
"Not this time", Jack called as he batted the pole-ax away before spinning and sending the ice grenade directly at the Leader of the Horsemen.
Retane took the blow head on as he laid there. His skin penetrated all over by the shards. The Namekian felt the pain and accepted it, even laughing as his purple life force came from his throat.
"What's so funny?" Jack stood over his fallen leader another ice bomb set to slam at Retane's face in a moment's notice.
"I'm about to die", Retane answered with a wicked grin. "I told you someone would die on this feild. I just didn't expect it would be me. "
"You aren't dead yet. Why did you do this, Retane? Why?" Jack didn't drop his guard, but he wanted answers.
"Someone dies on this field today kid. You can't stop that." The Horsemen rolled his head to the side to let the violet life force pour from his mouth and to avert his eyes from looking at his comrade. It was sprinkling now.
"I don't have to kill you. I wont do it." Jack answered though the orb stayed charged.
"You kill me or I kill you. You choose." Retane looked to the clouded skies.
"No. I refuse!" Jack Frost dropped Savior then. "No one has to die today."
"Someone already has." Retane laughed as he pointed towards his children. Dante was gripping his chest, his fingers wrapped around a large shard of ice.
The Winter Spirit's eyes went wide in shock. "No!"
Krosst and Reatus gathered around their brother, trying to help him.
"How does it feel, Guardian? To know you are about to take a life? Another life?" Retane spoke as he watched his son laying their dying. Jack collapsed to his knees. They had become to weak from shock.
Retane grinned through his bloody teeth., "You are welcome, Jack."
Jack looked to Retane confused as the Namekian reached out and grabbed at his shoulder. A slight nod of the head, and Airyonna was down beside the injured Namekian child. The guardian looked back and forth for a moment, trying to grasp it all."What? Why?"
"I told you someone would die here today," Retane pulled himself up and spat a huge wad of purple in between his legs.
"No one is dead." Jack looked bewildered and confused still trying to grasp it all.
"Those nightmares. You wont scream in your sleep anymore." Retane wiped at his cheek.
"Wait! What?" Jack looked down to the ground as he started to understand a bit more.
"You took a life and it is my fault. I killed your innocence, my friend. I am sorry. But I had to remind you that you are who you are and that you have a good soul. I am sorry for all the pain I have caused you."
Jack collapsed to is posterior and rubbed his head. "Thank you."
"I'm not done." Retane let out a long low growl as he channeled what energy he had left.
Jack let his tears mix with the rain as a memory flooded into head.
----
Emma laid there looking into the Winter Spirit's eyes. He wasn't there but he was. He looked down at her as she laid on her deathbed. She reached up and caressed his face. "I know you're there Jack. I can feel you're presence. I am sorry that you had to go, but I'm glad that you were our Guardian. Don't be sad. You were the best brother ever. I am just sorry I never got to tell you."
"I love you too, Emma." Jack kissed held her hand and kissed her forehead as she slowly slipped away peacefully.
----
"Thank you, Retane." Jack wiped his eyes s Airyonna and Alaina came towards them.
"No." Retane fell back, into the wet mud. "Thank you."

I refuse to lose this battle,
Let whatever come my way.
I am stronger then my rival,
No, I will not fall today...
Let whatever come my way.
I am stronger then my rival,
No, I will not fall today...
