Day 1 Evening
#11
Somerled cast his gaze to the forest around him, left alone after Amaterasu had dove into the thicket to find food. The great kami had the right idea. If her geography was right, then they would soon be free of the forest, and away from one of the more abundant sources of food. Finding food now would be the best option, and the best place to find that just so happened to be all around him.

Throwing his gaze upwards, the monster quickly scanned the foliage above for any signs of movement. Trees were the safe haven for birds, squirrels, raccoons, and the occasional porcupine, amongst others. Fortunately enough, only the former two were actually maneuverable in trees. The latter would just bumble around, easy pickings for a predator like Somerled.

Grabbing hold of the trunk, the storm spirit began hauling himself up the tree, the effort made easy by his inhuman strength. Within seconds, he had pulled himself onto the lowest-hanging branch, the leaves shaking with the branch’s new burden. All around him, life sprang into action as the intruder became known. All the nimble creatures of the canopy fled with all due haste, making quite a ruckus as they made their escape. With no time to waste, the monster’s hands shot up and closed around the next branch, and he heaved himself up, damn near crushing a squirrel that didn’t get the memo as he planted his feet onto this branch.

Now in full panic mode, the furry little woodland gymnast bolted towards the trunk, claws scrabbling at the bark. Somerled knew first-hand that his clumsy, human-like agility would be no match for the king of the trees. No matter how much he would roll and burst, the speedy rodent would always be one step ahead. Instead of grabbing at the squirrel that he’d have no chance to catch, he rotated his torso and gripped the end of the branch that tottered over the forest floor. With a mighty heave, the branch gave away in a resounding CRACK, and he whipped his improvised weapon around powerfully, the tip shattering apart as it crashed through the other branches all around.

CRACK

The sound of exploding wood once again burst into existence as the branch smashed against the tree, the already-fractured end spinning off with force further into the forest. A high-pitched squeal was cut short with the strike, the squirrel completely and thoroughly squashed by the high powered impact. It’s body tumbled lifelessly to the ground below. Somerled himself was also thrown off by the power of his swing. His feet were torn off the branch he was perched on, his body spun by the momentum.

For a very brief moment, the monster felt weightless as he began plummeting from the tree. This wasn’t a feeling he wanted to enjoy, however, because it would only result in a broken and bloody body. His hand shot towards the nearest branch to him, and it met its mark. His vision jolted as the momentum kept him going, arm ripped free from the branch, and his body met the forest floor.

“Fuck...” Somerled wheezed, breath forcefully expelled from the fall. To say that was a terrible move would be an understatement. Just why did he need to utterly annihilate a fucking squirrel with that much goddamn force? He could have held back so much strength there and still would have had it. “Fuck.” he repeated quietly.

Footsteps crunched outside of the monster’s line of sight, coming to a stop not too far away. Quickly sitting up in case it was an enemy, Somerled shot his head around to the source of the noise.

“Oh, welcome back!” he greeted, voice lively despite his recent fall. The great kami had returned from her foraging, sleeves full of various fruits. She glanced down in slight surprise, probably not having expected him to pop up from the ground.

“Have you had any luck finding something to eat?” She asked. While he doubted it was her intention, Somerled realised that just laying there probably didn’t give the best impression.

“There’s a squirrel somewhere in that direction,” he answered, intending to point towards the tree he had just so ungracefully fallen out of. As it was, his arm was being stupid and didn’t listen to his orders. “Well that’s not good...” the storm spirit muttered, looking back down at his arms. He couldn’t see a whole lot concerning his arms with his coat in the way, but judging by the gratuitous amounts of red now staining his hands and the white of his coat, the diagnosis probably wasn’t good.

Wriggling his bum arm free from the jacket, Somerled got a much better look at it. There was a new bump where there shouldn’t be one. “Hands torn all to shit, shoulder dislocated. Glad I can’t feel this. That’d suck.” The shoulder was a priority. Once that was taken care of, then he could bandage his hands up with shreds of his coat, if only to stop infection. It wasn’t like he was gonna bleed out from a hand wound. He looked back up at Amaterasu. “Wanna help me reset this thing?”
