Mickey wouldn’t approve of the word choice, but Proto Man couldn’t deny the simple observation he’d made over the last few hours…
People here are assholes.
There was nearly three dozen primes milling around the temple, and a vast majority of them had been confrontational from the get-go. The spirit, trapped as he was in whatever strange state he’d been placed in, had been forced to deal with their suspicions, accusations, and insults from the moment they arrived.
Was it that hard for them to believe that someone needed their help?
Was it that hard for them to sacrifice a little bit of their time to lend someone a hand?
Proto Man scowled and shook his head. These same people would probably lash out against the world if no one would lend them any of their time when they were down on their luck.
Those thoughts swirled in the robot’s head as he relaxed against the column. The woman from the Underverse—Trixie—seemed nice, but if that was the case, what had she done to wind up in the Omniverse’s maximum security prison? Who had she murdered or cheated or double-crossed?
Before he could raise the issue with the redheaded woman, Proto Man felt a strange sensation wash over him. All across his screen, a couple dozen warning messages popped up, but he had far too little time to process any of them before everything went black.
The darkness lasted for only a few moments before the robot hit the water. With a gasp, he snapped back into consciousness to find himself bobbing up and down in low tide. Despite his limbs being more unresponsive than he would have liked, Proto Man managed to kick and pull himself toward the sand-coated shore of the island. When he sank his gauntleted fingers into solid earth, he let out a sigh of relief and crumpled down as gentle waves washed over his back.
After a few moments of lying on the beach, Proto Man tried to toggle his information overlay. Even if there was no wifi here, he could still start a datalog about this new environment. With any luck, he might be able to triangulate at least part of his surroundings once he found a higher broadcast point.
…or at least he wanted to do that.
Water must have scrambled my systems. The thought brought a scowl to Proto Man’s face as he pulled his knees up under his body and lifted his head. After scanning the white beach, he placed a hand into the sand and scowled at the slimy damp sensation that enveloped his hand. Along with the strange sensation, he started to feel a mild numbness in the limb, much like he had in his legs before he’d pulled them up out of the water-logged sand.
Water had always felt slimy, but Proto Man didn’t recall it muddling with his wiring or environmental sensors to such a drastic extent.
Much to his mounting frustration, his internal display was empty.
Actually it wasn’t empty—it was just nonexistent. No temperature readout. No indication of time. No indication of elevation.
Proto Man wasn’t sure where he’d been dropped, but he felt…
Nervous?
