Amber's (Not So) Amazing Art
#5
Jade Harley Wrote:No, no. This is actually very good. I'd say you're above average in drawing ability. Did you use any reference images? That could help you get the proportions right, if you're willing. Remember, being able to draw is not a natural talent by any means, just like writing, and it takes practice and observation to make something work! You may surprise yourself with what you can turn out. :-)

Just saying "practice" is dumb advice, though. Look at the people around you. Look for familiar shapes that you can mimic with a pencil. If you don't wanna seem like a total creep, Google images or look at yourself in a mirror. Try to get a general, loose shape down, and then go in for the detail.

I'd start with drawing hands, but I've spent hours trying to get the curve of my chin and eyebrows just right when sitting on a bathroom counter. I typically work in rounded shapes and organic blobs based on the shadows I see cast over a face before drawing the face itself around them. There's no wrong way to practice.

You can even trace many different pictures of hair or differently positioned limbs until you have an approximate memory sketch in your mind. I did this with goldfish and now I can basically draw them from memory without copying a stock image while adding my own personal flair to them. I'm not a professional artist by any means, but this is how I became comfortable with my own drawing experience. Even though your art style might not appear to be changing quick enough for you, over time it will definitely show.

If you'd like, I could possibly scare up some tutorials and general advice from concept artists for you. I have an enormous stockpile of references saved, although I haven't used all of them.

I did not use a reference picture. My style came from tracing picture of a friends work, she gave me a base that helped me learn a human shape. I just can't draw hands, so I need to work on that. :3
