This was not the way I had planned to spend my day.
His normally stern expression was set in a deep scowl, barely fending off another hamfisted blow from the hulking brute he'd managed to enrage. So far things had gone well enough for him, having managed to divert the majority of any incoming strike away from hitting home with their full impact. It was an easy task; the giant thing was a clumsy savage, relying seemingly on brute force and raw power more than anything. More than once one of those clumsy blows had almost taken his head off, though. It was more than enough to remind Colonel that ignorance and lack of skill didn't equal being incapable.
And the savage onslaught was so fierce and unrelenting it gave him precious little time to try and manage a counterattack to gain some breathing room. The few glancing blows he had managed to land didn't even seem to register on the monstrous creature. He was covered in cuts and his already decaying, decrepit form was further battered and covered in the trappings of a prolonged engagement...but it didn't even seem to have slowed him down any.
And for his part, the many blows Colonel had warded and turned aside had left him with his own failings and damage to worry about.
"GRUNDY CRUSH!" The white-skinned behemoth roared, and brought both hands up overhead, clasping them together. The soldier program barely had time to register the maneuver, so caught up in his train of thought, he could do little more than bring his arms up to block.
That was a mistake.
The vicious hammer blow hit with a sickening crunch, the ground under the both of them cracking and splintering, especially under Colonel's boots. The green energy blade that served as the armored automaton's primary weapon carved a messy gash in the zombified giant's arms in retaliation, and his open hand caught the interlocked fists. It took all his effort and strength, but somehow he managed to hold off the strike, though he was forced to one knee.
But something in his arms had suffered for it. His automated combat routines were already compensating for it; he could still function without impediment, but there had been some serious damage done. "How in the world...did you get so strong?!" he demanded of the giant, his words trailed by a pained exhalation.
In answer, the giant only let out a bestial roar of "GRUNDY NOT NEED TO ANSWER YOU! YOU ATTACK GRUNDY!" and ripped his hands free of the grasp of his robotic opponent. Staggering back upright without the excess weight forcing him down, Colonel took one ragged step backward, only to be met with the great brute merely taking a single, much larger, step forward toward him, arms spread wide, and grasping him by the shoulders with both hands. "AND NOW GRUNDY MAKE YOU GO AWAY!"
Colonel's feet left the ground, and his eyes went wide at the sudden realization of what the brute had planned. His saber immediately lit up with a crackling glow of energy, desperately trying to prepare some kind of countermeasure. Like a ragdoll, he was sent flying through the air.
In desperation, Colonel took a wild swipe with his saber, letting out the gathered energy. An arrow of bright green energy, crackling and sparking, darted through the air on a general course for his zombified foe. That was all he saw before he touched down in the middle of a river, vanishing under the surface as he sank like a rock.
This isn't working... Colonel's mind was racing as he settled on the riverbed, air bubbles spilling out from between clenched teeth. He only had a few seconds before he needed to take another breath, given his rough splash down landing. He needed to come up with something to land a serious blow. He did have a heavy weapon to bring to the table, but...
No test like a field testing.
On the surface, the chalk-white swamp monstrosity remained standing there, heaving deep breaths. A new gash, carved messily into his chest from the mechanical soldier's desperate attack, slowly oozed disgusting fluid, but seemed barely an afterthought. He simply stared at the river where Colonel had gone under, the thoughts of his simple mind a mystery to all but him.
He wasn't quite right.
Water sprayed everywhere as the cyber-soldier came soaring up out of it, toward the opposite bank of the river. In his free hand was a massive cannon, and no sooner did he land than he hit one knee, bracing the cannon. Grundy had time to blink before the massive weapon belched flame and let loose a thunderclap of ignition and spat forth a massive shell, aimed straight at him.
