Colosseum - Spectator Thread
#88
There was so much about the little girl that Jade wanted to know, for being able to survive without sustenance or even oxygen seemed like a pretty amazing feat to the Witch. She supposed that it meant Rebecca was just as extraordinary as she looked, at least when it came to her possible humanity, and that both excited and unsettled Jade. Somehow, despite Rebecca’s cheerfulness, something that Nealaphh had said came back to Jade with startling clarity.

So this was the one whose freedom had earned it a hefty bounty, alongside other unfortunate misunderstandings. Maybe she could ask Rebecca about it? Was the child even aware of her own singularity? It was all very confusing, to say the least.

Jade had not seen the Aspects depart, their obsidian frames whizzing off over the crowds and the light breeze interposed around them falling silent and dull. They were terribly odd, she thought, but not in such a way as to make her too irritated by their sudden abandonment of what Jade thought had the potential to become an interesting, pleasant conversation. It seemed as if she would have to pester Nealaphh later with any questions; it had always been so very well-informed about almost everything and more than willing to impart this knowledge, even if it didn’t consider her a friend!

When she glanced up toward it, the Colosseum loomed oppressively in the distance, forms and colors painted thickly over the stirring objects and obscure streaks of fair goers placed before it. Bronzed rooftops packed with wiry tufts of thatch towered above the countless makeshift storefronts, but only a hundred or so people were easily discernible to the eye. While the scents, sights, and sounds still flowed towards her in a pyramid of illumination and marvelous, tuneful movement, the festivities were ostensibly slackening into more of a yawning blue evening waltz than a springy golden jig.

From what Jade could tell at the time, the crowds were dwindling and this entire horrible business would soon exit from her life, stage left. This thought loosened a tangled emotion that had wound up somewhere in her, and the girl’s teeth soon glimmered in a wash of splendid light as she smiled.

Her ruby red slippers had long since found their rightful place upon the ground again, and they shifted with a light squelch of mud and dewy grass blades until Jade was facing her group of new friends. She watched, a tad befuddled, as Weiss was helped to her feet by Ruby. Her green eyes twinkled as she began to speak, but there was a shade of sadness pooling in them that betrayed how she really felt.

“I really ought to be heading back to my tower now. Grandpabot’s bound to be worried sick about me! Even though Bec is the best supervisor, he was still upset when I left without a proper rifle.” She confessed, abashedly scratching behind one of her fuzzy ears.

The aforementioned wolfbeast sneezed in hearty agreement, much to the delight of the Little Sister still hanging on tight about the fuzzy ruff of his neck. A few neon green sparks bounced harmlessly over her nose as the First Guardian busied himself with snuffling through a clump of grass for a few stray kernels of popped corn.

“You’re welcome to come along if you’d like,” Jade continued, her buck-toothed smile becoming only slightly strained by the unease accompanying a most unfamiliar invitation. “I was never able to finish exploring the place, and I’m sure it would have been totally cool if I had! And even if you don’t want to come along, I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on my memo!”

Turning distinct attention towards Karkat and Valerie, Jade spoke in a light tone that was juuuust quiet enough to not be easily heard by the others. “I guess Strazio will proooobably be in the Nexus then, huh, Val? And Karkat, I’ll wait up on you if you want to go and round up Gamzee! But I shouldn’t leave my Grandpa on his own for too long, especially since we’ve just been reunited! It’s whatever you want to do, though.”

Once all of their goodbyes were said, Jade marched off purposefully into the crowd, fully intending to head home straightaway. However, something— or, rather, someone— caught her eye as she was leaving, and she quickly drew up short. Becquerel, Rebecca in tow, tilted his great furry head to the side in regarding the really, really tall person lumbering about several feet away.

“Who is that? He sure is tall!” Jade asked the First Guardian and Little Sister, only to receive two wholly inscrutable replies which consisted of a heavy whuffle and subsequent tittering.

Well, then. It seemed as if she would have to find out for herself! Squaring her shoulders and pressing her glasses up onto her nose once again, Jade went onward to investigate.
