Journey Through Paradise
#7
“I rather doubt that blunder of the woods would pop up here like we have…” Jaixe commented, looking ahead as one of the shadows, flanked by two more, slowly emerged from the thickets surrounding the traveling duo. When they closed in on them, Jaixe recognized the leader instantly and was hardly surprised.

“Are all guard sergeants in this world corrupt, or is it just you?” Jaixe addressed the sergeant that greeted them from before with condescension. It was odd that the man could advance ahead of them so quickly without Jaixe noticing, but that was hardly the more pressing matter here.

The sergeant smirked, as the two other well-armored thugs that posed as guards stood at either side of him with swords glistening in the darkened forest. His own armor also retained that uncharacteristic sheen, though his expression did not match the gallant charade he donned earlier.

“The only corruption here is that which you brought yourself, freaks of nature.” The sergeant chimed back with malice, “Your kind are unwelcome here.”

“And I suppose that you and your half dozen “guards” are going to stop us from passing through?” Jaixe inquired with a confident tone. After all, the last group of commoners that challenged them ended up dying rather swiftly. These fake guards would hardly be a challenge.

“Oh, I would never challenge a prime such as yerselfs on my lonesome,” the sergeant started coyly, a noticeable thudding and shaking permeating the ground beneath them all now, “but I have quite the friend who is dying to meet you.”

As if on cue, a much larger shadow, one that easily dwarfed the guards, started to emerge from further down the path. A low rumbling could be heard accompanying the great beast, as it stumbled forward, briefly illuminated by rays of sunlight shooting through the thick forest canopy. In those brief moments of illumination, Jaixe and Ash could discern grayish-green, scale-like skin with noticeable cracks, wrinkles, and other odd marks adorning it. When it closed in on the two, more of its features became clear. It was a beast with only the vague shape of a man, with eyes that bulged outward and a large snubbed nose dividing its features. Its mouth was large with cracked, yellow teeth as it roared at the duo with saliva and mucous being flung out of its maw. Its body was flabby and fat, but clearly hid muscles and a strength that far surpassed that of any human, or ten for that matter.

“A troll… how quaint.” Jaixe commented, looking up at the roaring, hungry monster that emerged from the forest. All around them as well, the guards stood with bows ready and arrows trained on the duo. This was quite the uneven situation they had found themselves in.

“I don’t suppose that grapple can carry two?” Jaixe inquired of Ash without looking back at her, keeping his gaze trained on the sergeant and his pet beast that seemed eager to smash its prey.
