Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#29
The human’s exaggerated, dramatic movements were simple for the God-Mind to read, but as white fire engulfed its auburn-crested foe, Nealaphh quickly came to understand the full depth of Gildarts’ capabilities. In due response to the imminent threat, the Enigma saw fit to raise another fold in space to ward off the cold rage of its opponent. The understanding, however, was punctuated further, as in the next waking moment, faster than even Nealaphh could process, Gildarts had shattered through the God-Mind’s hyperbolic shield and sent its body flying with all the force of a ballistic missile.

Reeling, Nealaphh did not even have time to consider the myriad rules of physics that had been violated, before its body collided directly with a monolithic cube a good hundred feet away. As the God-Mind impacted the black stone edifice, the entire, enormous structure fractured and burst to fragments, all of which toppled onto Nealaphh’s stricken frame. The thundering echoes faded rapidly into the inky void that surrounded the scene, adding a fitting denouement to the gravitas of Gildarts’ raw power. The Crash Wizard stood, arm crossed in front of his panting face, allowing the roaring aura which surrounded him to ebb. With fevered breath, he rose back to his full height, wary but pleased with himself.

It was not a lingering self-appreciation, for no more than had the last chunk of obsidian rubble fell, than did the epicenter of the destruction heave upwards into a whirling cloud of stone wreckage. At its center was Nealaphh, lacerated and broken. Its left arm hung entirely limp, and both legs appeared to be completely smashed. The God-Mind, however, had no need for a working body so long as its mind continued to function. With limbs dangling like a derelict marionette, the body of Nealaphh slowly rose within its vortex of obsidian, its three eyes burning into Gildarts’ own staunch hues.

I regret that you deem such force necessary, Gildarts. I hope that after this is through, we might yet become allies.

Something had changed within the God-Mind; Gildarts could feel it. The limp body began to drift towards Gildarts, leering at him evilly.

Until such time, I will do what is necessary to defend myself.

Gildarts was given no warning as he felt the space behind him begin to contract in an all too familiar way. With a phlegmy grunt, the wizard leaped forward, away from the ensuing burst of force that sent damp soil splattering in every direction. Even as clods of dirt smacked against the silky fabric of Gildarts’ beloved cape, the gravity wizard suddenly wheezed as his weight was multiplied hundreds of times. Nealaphh leered gleefully, its eyes perpetually flared, as the Crash Wizard was pulled to his knees by the conjured gravity well.

Before Gildarts could summon any disease-addled strength to resist the surging snare, a sizable boulder was sent flying into his face, whereupon it shattered into bloodied fragments. The second Gildarts felt the intense weight ebb, he dashed forward with grim determination, though it was hardly apparent through the crimson spatters that dribbled down his normally crisp features. The God-Mind sent salvo after salvo of crushing debris rocketing towards the wizard, but to no avail. With his body unburdened by tricks of space-time, it was all too easy for Gildarts’ fists to reduce every incoming hunk to sparkling white dust.

All at once, the spiraling tornado of earth came to an abrupt halt, freezing its writhing motion on the spot. This show of telepathic dexterity on the part of the Enigma did not serve to dissuade Gildarts’ inexorable advance. Nealaphh hovered amidst the heavy cloud, still hanging as if by a psychic thread. Again, whispering slights wriggled their way into Gildarts’ innermost thoughts.

I pity you Gildarts, but not for anything that shall come to pass here. I can ease your suffering, if only you give me a chance.

Gildarts responded only with another impatient growl; long and animalistic.

Then, my friend, I am sorry.

With an audible telepathic grunt, Nealaphh hurled the remainder of its onyx fusillade towards Gildarts, momentarily obscuring its battered form. Sighing gutturally Gildarts raised a barrier of his own, letting the dust and stones scatter across the invisible shield like harmless rain. When at last the shadow could be seen, Gildarts reflexively flinched backwards, seeing that Nealaphh had curled into a foetal ball. The ground beneath the two of them darkened to pitch, and began scintillating with the brilliance of a million stars. Another mental scream raked its claws across the slate of the wizard’s mind. The interminable screeching threatened to force itself into a position of sole occupancy within Gildarts’ consciousness, so that he might think of nothing other than succumbing to the pulsating agony that resonated between the folds of his cortices.
