Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#27
Gildarts let the weight of his eyelids dip over the scene like smothering snakes. The darkness conquered the scene in the middle of battle. Eyes closed, as air swept in with a hollow wheeze and gushed out with a windy whooosh. A steel fist hovered directly over his enemy. Gildarts’ shoulders, while sinewy and built with unearthly brawn, seemed to wilt. Hesitation. An inkling of temptation which his wily opponent grasped at.

A mistake, and the God-Mind played off it as inspiration smoldered in its newly kindled eyes. Whether or not the mischief-maker was earnest in its original suggestion seemed ambiguous now. A rush of bloodlust fueled in the blaze of battle eternally cursed the mage's veins and Gildarts could taste the the rising tide on his tongue. The scenery that surrounded the star-crossed opponents churned like a resurrected storm of agonizing hell. The strategy-based creature would have been foolish to not seize the undeniable break in Gildarts’ concentration.

Relentless, as Gildarts was, he was still only human.

A splash of rain followed by a sudden, dreadful clash of scattered thunder, and the sudden arch of molten light bridged across the sky, these sensations were all that would keep him sane in the moments to come. The rest steamrolled, unrelentingly, on his exposed mind.

A rough downburst scraped at his skin, shook his mind, and rattled the cage that held captive the last of the jumbled fragments. Memories, now just pictures taking up painted space. This game of roulette was over, and there was no denying it, everything that had threatened to break him was now erupting. Letters, symbols, and numbers smeared across the distant faces in slashes of crimson blood. Fear choked in his throat and a painful feeling of staggering remorse shot through his heart with every scattered beat. It happened all at once, a sound like tin on iron clanking repetitively on stable bars before a streak of sun broke apart the pool of shadows. The bolt on the lock began to burst as though a force were vehemently shaking it from within, seen only through the flickers of light. Three viridescent eyes became the canvas of his overwhelmed mind and the variegated symbols slashed deeper with each thrashing stroke.

Gildarts growled and felt as though the layers of his skin were peeling back. An argent stream of light filled his already clouded eyes. Reflex caused the Prime to stagger back as he lost his footing, meanwhile, the God-Mind, once below him, seemed to be assessing the newfound damage. Its burnt umber robe was shredded from the leg down, leaving only a broken line of fabric and a very faint laceration symmetrically on the being’s japan shins.

Gildarts, seized the moment, his rage overthrew his body’s thirst for stasis. Blinding argent light had since engulfed his form and a vehement punch rippled into the side of the being’s face. Its hood fell, and with it, a flood of quenchless anger. Even with its seemingly impassive expression, its movements now measured with the weight of heavy and calculated consequence. The God-Mind cocked an ear, in no way meek as a curious youth might have, and its once stolid face now ‒still somehow shaded‒ seemed to glower, enticed by the excitement of this very real challenge.

It was ready for the next punch Gildarts polished off, and took advantage of the man’s inherent wheeze as its movements coiled in a fluent dodge while Gildarts slipped in a side winding hook to its left flank.

Now, the ringing in the mage's ears had shattered his vivid concentration and he fell, as though gravity had grated down on him. The sphinxlike being grew tall as its shadow descended. Emanating from its gaze was its resolution to destroy, and Gildarts braced with a defense of his own. A cloud of splintering void consumed the left side of his body, his shield had formed however, mostly to cover his right, which had been facing the God-Mind. The mage grimaced, but as a warrior, he couldn't be disappointed.

Gildarts remained on the ground in the aftermath of the explosion, which had caused his already mucky mind to swish with the stir of hot blood, pounding away at a tribal beat in his ears. A breath, almost as though the man was anticipating what would come. A vicious strike decimated its concentration as the God-Mind was charging his next imperceptible attack, was the stunning, invisible blow that collided into its ribs.

Blood for blood.

Each acknowledged, as Gildarts spat the taste of metal from his mouth, and Nealaphh graciously endured.

The next movement welled with power that began to shake in his fist. His feet dug into the ground, and Gildarts launched himself conclusively at his foe.
