Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#24
The lantern scanned the pavilion where the battle took place, quickly gathering a tactical sense of the situation. Dirt streets, low-density structures mostly supported by wood, about fifty feet across, plenty of places to hide. Three visible combatants, and Dean appeared to be engaged with another that he couldn’t see. Civilian population mostly clear. The child and the demon were both injured, but still able to fight.

He knew what he had to do.

He glanced down to his ring and demanded, “What is my current charge?”

“RING CHARGE AT TWENTY-SEVEN PERCENT,” the scratchy female voice barked back.

He narrowed his eyes, and his mustache curled with a sneer. “Good enough,” he scoffed.

Holding his fist over his head, a halo of golden energy flashed up around his body, beams of light shining outward as he was enveloped in a bath of hard-light energy. His previous attire was instantly and completely replaced by the snug, form-fitting suit of the Sinestro Corps, the gentle glow of his Fear-fueled aura clinging to his silhouette.

The man wasted no time on pomp or bluster, and instead charged straight forward towards Dean. Landing behind him, his instinctively lifted his ring and began to charge it for a blast. “Where’s your target?” he asked over his shoulder.

“Dunno,” the visibly battered demon replied, “Guy keeps turning invisible.”

“Quaint,” Sinestro snarked amusedly, then took to air. Hovering about ten feet above the ground, he leveled his fully-charged ring downward, and fired. The continuous stream of yellow power ripped at the earth, casting stone and debris in every direction as began to spin. The beam sliced tight, concentric circles into the road, working its way ever outward.

Dean stared up at the red-skinned man but just as he parted his lips to question him, he heard a shrill yelp from a few feet away. The demon turned his gaze and saw the beam stopped midair, the object that it hammered down upon not yet visible.

“Found you,” Sinestro purred, the blast instantly changing into a set of dense chains that wrapped around the boy’s thin frame. The assassin struggled for a moment, unseen even beneath the bonds. With the flick of a wrist, he slammed the young assassin into the street in front of Dean, a splash of blood spraying out for all to see.

Dean snatched at the invisible boy, then gleefully thrust the First Blade into some unknown portion of flesh. After a satisfying yowl from his victim, Sinestro released his hold, redirecting his attention just in time to catch a face full of musket-shot.

The anachronistic warrior bound across the battlefield, attempting to interrupt the alien’s counter-attack, though the heavy pellets that clashed against the golden barrier felt less like gunfire and more like firm punches through the shield. It was still enough to draw Sinestro’s attention.

Diving down from the sky, Sinestro ploughed into Shay’s chest and drove him into the ground. The two rolled through the impact, both handily coming to their feet, weapons at the ready. Twirling his gun around in his hand, the Templar cracked off another shot, then fluidly drew his bastard sword from its sheath into a cut. The korugaran leaned to the side, allowing the pistol round to zing from his chest and materialized a blade to match his opponent’s, intercepting the slash.

“Not bad,” he quipped, then drove his foot into his opponent’s knee, undermining his stance. The hard-light weapon suddenly vanished from the lantern’s hand, only for him to step in with a new one in his other hand. Shay stumbled in bewilderment at the rapid exchange, only able to gawk as the yellow blade sliced into his belly.

“But not particularly good, either.” Flourishing the transparent sword with a disapproving grimace, the greatest lantern lifted it overhead to deliver the finishing blow. As his muscles contracted, an arrow flew from the corner of his eye, knocking his thrust wide. As his focus shattered, so did the construct, a thousand shards of twinkling amber dissipating into nothingness.

His eyes snapped to the side, instantly locking on the slight-framed healer that had dared distract him. “You humans always have such strange abilities,” he shouted to her.

In a blur of yellow he was across the field, a hand around her neck. Lifting her from the ground, he ignored a few of her less-than-effective blows and idly said, “But I wonder…”

With a burst of power, the two jetted upwards, soaring over the buildings and towers until they looked down on the city like a tiny model from high above. The people smoldering pavilion still raged on in their battle, appearing little more than a child’s toys, the explosions like paltry fireworks.

Leaning in, he completed his thought. “… Can you fly?”

Then he let go.
