Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#21
With a scowl, Proto Mouse fell back as the gilded monarch barreled across the street. Augmented by the crimson runes that burned harmlessly against his muscled body, Gilgamesh lashed out with a rapid succession thrusts from his bizarre, twisted weapon. The cybernetic rodent hopped away from the quick combo and fired a burst of energy pellets at the king. Anger hardened Gilgamesh’s features as he leapt free from the stream and landed a blow against his opponent’s shoulder.

Rolling with the impact, Proto Mouse caught himself before he fell lost his balance or could be assaulted once more. An energized blade crackled as it veered through the air toward Gilgamesh. Despite wielding a sword as a spear, he also seemed competent enough to use it to parry away the energy weapon. Even so, there was a clear strain on the man’s visage as he struggled against the sword.

“You need more hands,” the mouse whispered as he held up an arm cannon and fired a shotgun burst of energy into the chest and face of Gilgamesh. The monarch let out a gurgling, rage-laced scream as he was thrown backwards through the façade of a nearby structure.

As he moved to return to the battle proper, Proto Mouse was quickly surrounded by an assortment of armored guards. A collection of spears and short swords came his way without the slightest of warnings, and it was only a quick upward burst of his engines that prevented him from being mugged.

Ten yards up, Proto Mouse dropped onto the roof of a small structure and disengaged his weapons. With both his fists back in play, he reached out a hand and summoned his keyblade in a puff of white smoke. “You guys gotta head out.” He shouted down at the town militia shifted into a formation and drew shields. “Last warning.”

“For Nippur and Gilgamesh!” They roared as four of them in the back started hurtling stones at Proto Mouse using slings.

I’m sorry.

With a frown on his face, Proto Mouse dove from the roof into the group. Sunlight glinted off the keyblade as it blurred through the air, landing crippling blows against the skulls, elbows, and knees of the town guard. Shields planted firmly in the ground were bent beneath the cybernetic onslaught that befell the group of soldiers.

In a matter of moments, the little skirmish was over, and the squad of guardsman lay groaning and weeping around the now blood-spattered mouse. While scans revealed no fatalities among his attackers, Proto Mouse couldn’t help but feel dirty as he looked at the carnage he had wrought. Forlorn eyes regaled the carnage of a city under siege—fires spreading slowly across buildings as pillars of smoke left twisting trails in their ascent into the heavens.

While the semi-conscious men around him had been spared, Proto Mouse could hear screams all around him. Try as he might, people were suffering and dying all around him.

This doesn’t feel right.

Try as he might to put on a different air or persona, Proto Mouse knew that Gilgamesh wasn’t a stellar human being. After all, most tyrants masqueraded as ‘the good guy’ or tried to sell themselves as the ‘lesser or two evils.’ Even so, the men, women, and children who would be caught in the crossfire today weren’t guilty of the same crimes as their leadership. They were just trying to make a living in a hostile environment, much like the denizens of the Town with No Name, and they didn’t deserve the hellfire storm that was to descend upon them this day.

From somewhere behind Proto Mouse, he felt the shifting of several pounds worth of stone, brick, and wood. A heartbeat later, Gilgamesh came erupting up out of the mess of a former storefront. The monarch, his body still wreathed in burning runes, launched himself toward his adversary.

Holding out a fist, the robotic rodent scowled as he ducked under the blow. Anyone else, and Gilgamesh would have punched their skull off, but the cybernetically enhanced mouse managed to telegraph the attack. A split-second later, a knee smashed into the king’s exposed gut and sent him tumbling up over his diminutive opponent.

Once he was back on his feet, Proto Mouse primed his hand cannon as his opponent rose to his feet. “In the interest of your citizens, you should seek terms. This violence is only going to spread.”

When Gilgamesh failed to respond, the rodent lifted his buster gun and scowled as the weapon started to build a charge. “I won’t hold back against you… I’ve seen what you can do, and I won’t pull punches.”

The gilded king summoned his runic blade-spear and lunged to attack just as the words slipped from the cyborg’s mouth.

“Finish Buster!”
