Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#18
Agnès woke to her window bursting open and the sound of screams flooding into her room. Her eyes flew open and, while she couldn't figure out what had caused her window to open, she was more worried about who was screaming and why. In a moment Agnès was off her feet and standing by the singular window in her palace room, which gave her an overhead look at chaos breaking loose in the city.

It took the Vestal a moment to register that Gilgamesh was shouting at her to come to him, his voice echoing powerfully through the halls and to her room. She bit her lip and looked about the room - she hadn't recalled where she had discarded her bow when she arrived, so she scanned the room for it. On the floor near the door she saw her longbow and quiver, which she picked up as she pushed through her door and down the halls of Nippur's palace.

When she reached where she assumed Gilgamesh had been yelling, he was gone and the door was sliding shut at the hands of the man she had met at the door much earlier. With a bit of a sigh he opened the door again, saying "The king went this way", and Agnès helped, too, though perhaps more enthusiastically given the circumstances.

Before the palace was a mess of bodies here and there, most moving in some way or another. It was too much to comprehend, too much to bother trying to comprehend, at least to Agnès. Regardless, she tried to find a familiar face in the mix.

What was even going on? This was too disorganized to be training, and while she was unfamiliar with some of the people here, she could swear that there weren't this many she didn't know. Something was wrong, and since there was only one person she could think of who would know what was going on, she picked Shay out of the mess of combatants.

She couldn't help but be at least a little afraid. Whatever was going on, it wasn't friendly, she knew that much. A pit grew in her stomach - what if something had happened to Shay? What if something would happen to Victor and Gilgamesh? If her allies died, if the only people she truly knew in this world disappeared... what would she do?

She couldn't make out details in how frantic everything was, but people looked like they were getting hurt, and badly at that. Almost every part of Agnès screamed for her to stop, help these people, but her legs protested and carried her forward to one of the few familiar faces on the battlefield. In her panicked running she found herself nearly tripping here and there though luckily not falling, and as she drew closer to Shay, she...

"Where is Shay?" Agnès asked herself, only to find her answer fall from the sky. Shay jumped off a nearby building, landing on someone wielding something similar to what the Stormtroopers were using - a useless-looking hunk of metal. Before she could think more on the subject, Shay brought a fist down on the boy he had pinned, filling the air with a quieter but more sickening crack.

Despite the rough-looking punch - Agnès doubted she could throw one better - the boy showed fierce resistance, raising what she hesitantly referred to as a weapon quite quickly, but the Vestal was already in the process of raising her bow and aiming an arrow.

She was quicker than she would have liked to be normally, so she was sloppy with her draw, causing the string to rub uncomfortably against her arm. Because of her quick draw she missed her target, instead hitting the ornate piece of metal and sending it off of its target. From it came a blast of fire, which Shay recoiled from, giving the boy with the magic metal a chance to break free from being toppled over.

Agnès approached Shay, putting another arrow to her bowstring and training her sight on her target for safety's sake. "Shay, are you all right? What's happening? And..." she stopped herself for a moment. She couldn't fight on and let her ally continue on with injuries. She stepped back, slinging her bow over her right shoulder and placing her previously strung arrow in its quiver. "Let me tend to your wounds. If we cannot withdraw, I will support you from a distance. I'll not intrude on this battle unless you request I do so."
