Excalibur, Caliburn and the King of Knights
#16
Arthuria had a simple response towards the other’s thoughts about herself being permitted to make mistakes. In the knight’s mind, a King wasn’t allowed the chance of making wrong decisions or mistakes of any kind. ”A King is not allowed such luxury, Shiranui. All of our lives are fleeting, on a journey towards their end.. However, a King is not allowed the luxury of making mistakes. A King is responsible for not only their own life, but of their people’s lives. Of their country.”[b] she stated, pausing for a moment before continuing with her explanation. [b]“Whilst even the greatest kingdoms are destined to eventually fall, no king wishes to see their land burn due to their own mistakes.”

In reality of course, Arthuria’s only real mistake had been being too good of a king, to the point that people had believed she had no understanding of human emotion. But of course, Amaterasu couldn’t know that, as Arthuria hadn’t told her such things, nor did she herself acknowledge that simply being too good would’ve been the mistake she had made. As the woman tried to push the weight off of her shoulders, simply stating that such weight would crush her, the knight snapped back. “You cannot possibly fathom to understand, Shiranui. You are a god. Should a responsibility be given unto you, such as the Akuma, you had your godly powers. You know naught of leading a country, nor do you understand the responsibility that cometh with it. The people’s lives, as well as their deaths are my responsibility as a King. My people are my burden. The King is there to serve their people, not the other way around.” She paused briefly as she assembled her thoughts, before she finished. “As a knight and their King, their lives are my responsibility. Should I abandon that responsibility, I could no longer call myself either, nor would I have any honour left. The burden is mine to carry.”

It was her turn to listen once more, as she pondered the other’s word before formulating her response in a calm tone. “That is indeed true..” After a pause her response came in a disturbingly calm tone. The King of Knights stood up and turned to face Amaterasu, reaching her hand out into the air, as a sword materialized into her hand out of thin air. However, Arthuria didn’t seem to be intent on using it for attacking, as she was holding it by the scabbard instead of the hilt. “Do you see this, Shiranui?” she asked, before continuing and not giving the other a chance to respond. “This sword is called ‘Caliburn’ - The Sword of the King. This is the sword that granted me the right to rule my land. It was once lodged in a stone, placed with a spell that only the just, and rightful King of Camelot, would be able to pull it free. And that is what I did.” the woman ceased her explanation for a moment to allow the history to sink in for a bit before continuing. “There was certainly a mistake when I pulled the sword free. Should I return the world into a state where I never did such, someone else, the rightful and just king would do it. And my country would prosper. It is not that I would cower before the responsibility of my people, but the wish to correct the mistake the blade made.” she stated calmly. Afterwards, she allowed the blade to dematerialize back to wherever she had summoned it from.

Arthuria pondered in her mind what Amaterasu said next… “I was not an emotional king. I always aspired to be just, and did not allow emotions to be part of my ruling. Always just and correct was, what I strived for. The people eventually seemed to think, that I couldn’t understand human feelings.” she said as she turned to follow Amaterasu with her steps. “Strong? How do you mean that, Shiranui?” she asked with a mildly curious tone as she afterwards commented upon them being Heroic Spirits, as well as upon their destination. “It is odd that we lack Masters.. So we might not be in a Holy Grail War.. But, where should we head?”
