A hot desert wind howled around Ganondorf, scouring his face with coarse sand and whipping his hair into flowing fire. Beside him, Eighteen had taken to wearing a summoned cloth over her mouth and nose to keep the sand from invading her body, but the Gerudo needed no such protections. Perhaps a weaker man would consider this desert a hell of earth, but for him… it was merely home.
Their travels had been uneventful, the Gerudo’s knowledge of the desert keeping them from the more dangerous avenues of approach. Even so, his blonde ally had remained remarkably quiet during the journey, and any attempts to start up a conversation were dashed by her cold looks. In fact, it seemed she was more interested in occasionally mocking him and judging what he was doing than actually talking. Ganondorf bore her jibes and glares with strained patience.
Long before they could see the actual damage, the smoke rising in the air above Nippur was proof of its recent troubles. First one voice, familiar to both Ganondorf and Eighteen, and accompanied by a strange yellow symbol in the air, called for Nippur’s surrender. Soon enough it was answered by another voice, this unfamiliar. The two shared a wordless look before hurrying on towards the city. As they passed through the gates, a voice addressed them from ahead.
“Is it you? Did you put that yellow rune into the sky?”
Ganondorf stared at the man in dumbfounded silence for a moment before giving his answer.
“No. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to meet with the leader of this city.”
For her part, Eighteen remained silent, though her eyes never left the form of the speaker. Ganondorf pressed onward, hoping to avoid a needless confrontation with this strange man. But it seemed the man wasn’t about to take this dismissal lying down, for he spoke again as they passed him by.
“Don’t you dare walk away from me! Maybe you’re not lying and you aren’t him, but if you’re here and want to see Gilgamesh, then you’re obviously allied with him.” the black-haired man cried out to the duo’s unheeding backs, anger heating his voice. His next words, however, DID cause them to take notice.
“Magnus Totum Lacerovisis!”
Though his attack was swift, neither of his foes were unexperienced fighters and they quickly leapt away from the bolt of energy. Ganondorf smirked as he looked back toward the wizard.
“You missed,” he said simply, a second before a force from behind him sent him sprawling to the ground and the sound of falling stone nearly drowned out a woman’s cry of pain. A nameless fear sprang into Ganondorf’s breast as he looked behind him. For there, amidst the rubble of the building that man’s attack had struck instead of him, a pale arm hung limply skywards.
All thoughts of retaliation left Ganondorf as he sprang toward the debris, his large hands lifting and pushing stone away from his fallen comrade until finally he could see her face. A rivulet of blood flowed from her forehead, staining the ground a beautiful crimson shade as she lay there, unmoving. However, his opponent seemed to take the Gerudo’s stunned silence as an opportunity to press his advantage, and the words, “Crucio” left his lips just before Ganondorf was wracked with horrific pain. His every nerve was set afire and the behemoth of a man fell flat under that agonizing curse. Which only served to place him at a better vantage to see Eighteen’s still form.
Rage swelled within the Gerudo’s breast, a heat more intense than even that his foe was giving to him. And though his body rebelled against it, he rose to his feet. Wolf-like eyes regarded the man as Ganondorf turned to face him, and in that instant, beyond the confusion on the wizard’s face, the Demon King saw him. No. He didn’t just see him. He saw into Tom Marvolo Riddle. In that moment, under the Gerudo’s scrutinizing gaze, the man was laid bare to him. This had happened before, when Ganondorf had faced Gilgamesh during the Dante’s Abyss Tournament. The Demon King smirked, even through the intense pain of Tom’s Cruciatus Curse, and a plan for his vengeance formed in his sinister mind.
First, his gauntleted right hand rose, catching the man’s spell against his own dark energies, and the pain left Ganondorf. Tom was no slouch, of course, and even set off-balance by this sudden counter, he readied another attack. Unfortunately for him, Ganondorf wasn’t about to allow him the time. The Gerudo’s left hand moved over head, and within its grasp an object formed; a wand of yew. The tip lowered towards Mr. Riddle as Ganondorf spoke words he’d never known before now.
“Avada Kedavra!”
