Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#9
Nealaphh blinked slowly as the world shifted and bent, becoming a shaded, gestalt land. Tall, monolithic structures comprised of an obscure stone-like substance protruded from the firm, loamy soil underfoot. The gloom was so complete that it prevented one from seeing more than a mere eighty feet into the distance. As it was, Nealaphh could barely see Gildarts looming at the edge of its visual perception.

The mysteries of how and why it had been brought to this place would have to wait, as always. The God-Mind could only presume that this man meant to do it harm, since Gildarts, for Nealaphh did indeed know of this Prime, had accompanied the cartel of glorified raiders which now invaded Nippur. A pity that the mission of retrieving Demetri would have to be delayed. Hopefully Mr. Riddle would be able to handle himself. With a nebulous puff of black smoke, Nealaphh shifted from the form of a crow to its usual enigmatic, enrobed visage. Gildarts had yet to make an aggressive move. How polite.

How unfortunate for us both that we come to find ourselves in this predicament. Do you usually make a habit of accosting strangers, Gildarts?

Nealaphh said, adjusting its robe slightly. Apparently this was all the invitation that Gildarts needed to spring forward with an outstretched palm. As the immortal sped towards the God-Mind, Nealaphh dipped its awareness into the time-stream of this removed patch of space and coaxed Gildarts’ passage through the temporal medium into a faster clip, causing the wizard to cruise past Nealaphh in the blink of an eye, slowing to a halt some thirty feet behind him. The shadow turned and offered a weary gaze as it witnessed the attack meant for its own body reduce a tetragonal mound to cubed fragments. Gildarts took a deep breath and steadied himself. His opponent fought with guile and patience in contrast to his own direct approach; that much was clear. It would just have to be taught that a square peg can indeed be fit through a round hole if pounded hard enough.

In the moment that Gildarts took to turn back around, Nealaphh had seized upon the man’s quantum unawareness to shift its location to on top of a lopsided pyramid. From this vantage point, Nealaphh was easily able to pluck the fragmented cuboid stones from the ground and send them hurtling towards Gildarts in rapid succession. The paltry attack was deflected all too easily by a quick net of force that the wizard projected from another outstretched palm. The man sighed and wobbled slightly.

“Are we finished testing the waters?” he grumbled, clutching a shaky hand over one eye. Nealaphh tilted its head again, taking in the man’s posture and the surface thoughts that were continually trickling into the psychic medium. Illness. Desperation. Misery. Pain. Regret. Yes, all of these things ran through Gildarts’ mind, distracting him from the fight. Perhaps if Nealaphh could bring them to the forefront of his mind, it could draw the man’s attention away from the exchange of blows all together.

Are you alright Gildarts? You seem unwell.

The wizard only grimaced in response and began to summon more of his brilliant white energy to hand. Nealaphh was honestly not used to fighting an opponent that was as deliberate and methodical as itself, but the change of pace was welcome as Gildarts sent blast of pale luminance roaring towards the God-Mind. Nealaphh stood its ground atop the misshapen structure, lensing the space in front of itself outwards and letting the crash magic warp around its ebon form.

As it was, however, Nealaphh was not expecting Gildarts to be able to maintain an attack of such intensity for so long, so when it was forced to drop its defense and suffer the stinging lacerations delivered by the ray of wild magic, it was genuinely surprised. A Prime with a mind on the level of Nealaphh’s had quite a bit of time to consider the implications of this error as it was knocked off of its perch and into the damp earth far below. It was out of sight from the wizard once again, having been knocked to the far side of the pyramid, but Nealaphh didn’t even have time to think about teleporting before this structure was also dismantled by Gildarts’ might.

“What’s it to you?” Gildarts growled, curling his iron digits into a fist and delivering a crunching blow to the God-Mind’s mid section. Nealaphh was sent tumbling along the ground for several yards before rolling to a stop and slowly getting to its feet. When it looked up, Gildarts was already on top of it.

Perhaps I can help.

Nealaphh said this, but in the next instant, all of Gildarts’ senses screamed as Nealaphh’s eyes flared into white brilliance...

And, we dream of home I dream of life out of here Their dreams are small My dreams don't know fear I got my heart full of hope I will change everything No matter what I'm told How impossible it seems We did it before And we'll do it again We're indestructible Even when we're tired And we've been here before Just you and I
Don't try to rescue me I don't need to be rescued
