Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#4
The city of Nippur gleamed below them as the 4 men flew overhead, surveying the area. Gildarts dangled from a citrine band of light, being towed along by the lantern that headed the group. Even from such great heights, the people stared to the sky, pointing and jeering. Smoke still streamed from several points around the city, the people still gathering their things from the ground. It was obvious that there had been some conflict amid the streets of the city, though it was almost impossible to ascertain the true casualties that they cost.

He had seen many things far worse than this, though the glimmer and almost untouched palace in the center of the settlement touched on a sharp nerve in his chest. Somehow the structure’s extravagance reinforced Proto Mouse’s statements.

Seeing the little scrambling people, motes scurrying across the sandy streets like ants, the distracted and poorly placed guardsmen, the clear lack of effective defense… it made the Lantern’s skin crawl. He had seen it a million times on a million worlds.

Chaos.

Quietly, he held his ring up to his mouth. “Ring, open transmission with Dean Winchester.”

“TRANSMISSION OPEN.”

“Dean, this is Sinestro. You are near the gates of the city you spoke of?” He paused, and listened to the man’s answer. “Good. Please introduce yourself to the local guards. Avoid any civilians.”

Hovering high above the city, the quartet of men loomed like angry stars in the sky. Narrowing his eyes, the Yellow Lantern held his fist high, a beam slicing upwards. It erupted into a massive circle before lines burned into the cloudless blue, slowly inscribing the symbol for which the day would soon be known.

His voice boomed over the city, and those who might have blissfully ignored the team who so casually flew over them were suddenly snapped to attention.

“To the residents of the city of Nippur: I and Sinestro, and I represent the LAW. Your so-called king and those with whom he associates are now wanted for their actions against the peace and order of these lands, as well as the murder and exploitation of many others.

“And to those who would follow Gilgamesh?” His lips curled into a baleful sneer, “Join or die.”
