Legacy & War (Battle of Nippur)
#3
The trio soared through the Dunes, the ring guiding them towards Dean’s most recent message. Warm air brushed by them, even at the dizzying heights they had gained, and the sun battered them just are ferociously as it ever had.

Sinestro had allowed the ring to fully power itself, and his sleek body suit had taken the place of his more common attire. If it had not been for him leading the group, he was more than sure than the cyborg would have easily overtaken him, even in his powered-up state. Though he had no way of knowing for sure, he had the feeling that Proto Mouse was forced to hold back power that he hadn’t seen since the Corps Wars.

“So what’s the plan when we get there?” Orion demanded more than asked.

“We assess the situation,” Sinestro coolly replied. “If it becomes clear that the individuals that live within Nippur do the land more harm than good, we’ll make sure that they don’t get the chance.”

Proto mouse easily accelerated to fly beside the men, offering a concerned gaze. “Don’t underestimate Gilgamesh or his followers! They may seem cordial, but don’t let their appearance fool you; they’re killers.”

Sinestro narrowed his eyes at the flying mouse. “How can we be sure that you’re telling the truth about that? What if you’re simply angling us to take care of an enemy of yours?”

Proto Mouse smiled almost cheerfully “Ha ha!” he laughed distinctively, “I’ve got no reason to do something like that. I’m here to help, remember?” Orion seemed unconvinced as he glared to the korugaran that flew beside him, but offered no rebuttal. Sinestro only turned his eyes to the horizon and pressed onward.

A glint caught the saiyan’s eye before anyone else’s, and he came to an abrupt stop, the ki dissipating from around him in a conflagration. The other two quickly made note and paused not far away from their partner.

A white line of energy crackled over the sand, surmounting a peak before terminating in an earth-shattering explosion. The white energy enveloped the ground below it; deep fissures drown in perfect lines, separating the shifting sand into neat little cubes before relegating them to oblivion. There was a tense moment between the men, but all came to the same conclusion and moved without words.

Proto Mouse landed beside the crater and observed the eerily straight lines the explosion had dug, appearing unnaturally geometric even as the surrounding grains flooded in to fill the void. “What could have done a thing like that?” he asked inquisitively.

“Something close,” Sinestro returned. He drifted up and peered over the edge of the mound. Spying the dark mote ambling limply through the valleys of heat, he took a deep breath. “Something powerful.”

Orion quickly joined him and peered through the bending air at the lone wanderer. “I’ve seen a single man do much worse.”

“They look like they could use some help,” Proto Mouse chimed in, rushing by foot to the pinnacle of the dune.

Sinestro nodded, “And perhaps there is an opportunity to gain some further assistance. I doubt an entire city will be so easy to overcome, if it comes down to that.”

“Hmph,” Orion grumped, apparently more willing to speed headlong into an unknown conflict than waste his time with wandering strangers.

Not wasting his words trying to convince his more aggressive compatriot, the lantern ignited in a flare of amber and rocketed towards the lone stranger. As he came closer, he slowed his approach and the being, now seen to be a man, turned to face him. As soon as he struck the ground, the familiar trappings of Sinestro the Deputy flickered into existence over his uniform, the golden star glinting off his chest. “Hello there, traveller,” he said softly, allowing the brim of his hat to conceal his face in shadow. “You seem to be having some trouble?”

The haggard mage balled his fists slowly, and focused on containing his random magical outbursts. “I would stay away,” he warned, “there’s something wrong with me.”

The lantern didn’t leave, but her didn’t move any closer either. “Wrong with you? In what way?”

“i-“ the man faltered, choking back his emotion, “I can’t control my magic.” He shook his head solemnly, “I can’t use omnilium either.”

Sparks suddenly flashed from his body and his eyes went wide with panic. “Get away!” he commanded, then cast his hand out in the opposite direction, casting a wave of destructive force from his hand. The nearby earth shuddered and quaked as his power tore the earth apart. He breathed heavily, sweat rolling down his brow. “If I try to use the magic, I can at least direct it,” he panted, turning back to the deputy. “But I’m still not sure what to do.”

Sinestro couldn’t help but smile as he observed the stream of destruction, unable to keep his mind from the man’s potential. “I’ll be happy to help you,” he purred. “What is your name?”

“I don’t know how you can help,” the man said, ignoring the question.

“Well, if you need to use your power in order to control it, for the time being, I can help you use it productively.” He gestured towards the men behind him, “We are headed on a peace keeping mission to the city of Nippur. It is a land currently held by what I understand to be a dictator and his enforcers. We intend on liberating them, if what I have heard is true.”

Turning, he motioned towards the cyborg of the group, “This is Proto Mouse. He is here to assist our effort.” His hand passed to the sullen saiyan, “And this is Orion. He aided my town when it was being attacked by a sizable raiding party.”

The wizard stared at the men for a long moment, and finally spoke. “Not much of a long-term solution, is it?”

Sinestro shrugged, “I am sure that as soon as we are finished with this task, I will have much more ample time to aid you in your search for a cure.” Orion’s eye twitched at the thought of their fight being postponed once again.

The mage braced his hands on his knees and closed his eyes, doing nothing but sucking down ragged breaths. After a time, he straightened his back and nodded to the trio. “Gildarts. And I suppose if I can do some good with this, I might as well.” He stepped towards the deputy, and allowed himself a weak grin, “Where are we headed?”
