The final battle of the surface of the Ashen Steppes was about to begin. The darkspawn forces had given their enemies 72 hours to either prepare or surrender. Not many did the latter. Those who chose the former were standing at the ready.
Wendy Garrison stretched across the narrow gap where two cliffs almost met. In the very center of the ramparts was King Koopa, flanked on either side by two of his spawn: Bowser Jr and this fortresses' commander: Wendy Koopa. On either side of them, all the way across the top of the fort, were the 'long-range' soldiers they had, known as the Hammer Bros and the Boomerang Bros. They also had the large creatures known as Piranha Plants who were prepared to spit fireball. Underneath them were the ground and flying forces, lined up ranks in front of the castle gates. The main bulk of the soldiers were regular green or red-shelled Koopas, some with wings and most without. There were also some surprises littered through-out the ranks, such as Chain Chomps and some local wildlife from the Ashen Steppes. More then just Koopas had heeded Bowser's call, and so his army was varied.
In front of them, with far greater number then anyone feared, was the Army of Nebula. The vast majority of the army consisted of just mindless, twisted corruption waiting to devour anyone that got in their way. But again, littered in their ranks were powerful siege weapons, long-range energy-wielding gunslingers, and some of the top Lieutenants in the army. It was easy to tell who was and who wasn't completely corrupted by the darkness. Those who had taken to Nebula's side willingly still had their mind. Most of them were Dragonling Knights, with full armor and long, beautiful swords. Other Darklings came from different races; rumor had it that an infamous faction in the Steppes had aligned themselves with Nebula as well. Also visible was the Darkloid himself, standing tall in one of the siege towers that were being pushed ever closer. He was holding a book in one of his scaly hands.
"Forward!" Came the single, sudden call. The 72 hours were up. The Darkloid commanded his army to attack.
"Hammer Bros! Fire!" Bowser roared out.
Some might have effected arrows, but instead hundreds of spinning hammers came flying from the top of the garrison walls. The mindless brutes called darkspawn rushed forward, not concerned with the fact that most of them would be smashed by these dark objects flying towards them. When impact was made, it was loud and violent, crushing monsters beneath them.
"Defend your Kingdom!" Bowser screamed down at the forces on the ground, in front of the gate. The main bulk of the Koopa forces began to charge. Many of the actual Koopa retreated into the shells and shot forward at their enemies.
From their angles up above all of the action, both Bowser and The Darkloid observed the ultimate chess match for the Ashen Steppes.
