I added a section at the end of the prologue. Might be a little too overly dramatic but it should answer those questions a lot better.
As for the staff shattering, i feel as though every character in a combat based RPG should have an Achilles' heel, no matter how hidden or protected it can be. This is Rubick's, at least for now. Since he also has daggers to parry attacks he should be gut.

And made nulling field so that it can take 10 weak attacks before being destroyed, one attack with effort put in it to shatter (though the shield itself will absorb most of the blow), and powerful moves like supers will destroy the shield in one go, with their attack strength going through unimpeded.
