There isn't a "hard" description on what the banishing circle looks like or works, but as soon as the winner of a fight is decided t can be used. If you choose to RP that as a ceremony or something, it can take as long as you want. If you want it to be instant, it can be like a portal and just suck them in. The major aspect of the circle is that it works as written, and the rules of it can't be circumnavigated to create other effects or cancel or amplify the intended effect of its use.
