The Golden Star
#9
Sinestro’s body surged with power. It had been so long since he had felt the presence of his power ring that it almost felt foreign, like kissing a lover after years of being separated, like feeling the handle of a sword you hadn’t wielded since that war so long ago. Once again, the lantern felt the ebb and surge of the emotional spectrum, fear pulsating through the town in twanging waves.

His senses pulsed with energy, and he could feel the rings sub-systems stabilizing his myriad injuries. His shattered nose painfully readjusted as he focused on it, a burst of blood spraying over his face as it straightened. With a wave of his hand, the blood on his head and neck burned away in a flash of yellow, leaving his visage clean but for the deep purple bruising. There was a tingling in his cracked ribs as they were stabilized and reinforced by the ring, and he took a deep breath in celebration of that.

He looked down upon the still body of the bandit, her slumped, blood-splattered frame clearly far beyond saving short of a miracle. Then again, he had seen far too many miracles in his day. He held his fist aloft and spoke into the glowing yellow object, “Ring, scan for life signs.”

A yellow beam washed over the woman’s bloody remains, her veins illuminating in a yellow, then her nervous system. After a few more moments of shimmering, the ring replied in a sinister, digital voice, “No life signs detected.”

As the ring confirmed her death his eyebrow quirked and his chin lifted ever so slightly, his mustache bending as a smirk of superiority grew on his lips.

“Good,” he murmured to himself, and took his attention away from her. “Ring, begin download of all available data on the Omniverse and all associated information.” The ring silently complied, raking through the Dataverse and compiling every comment, post and erroneous statement into a comprehensive library.

Roland, who stood across the street, saw the approaching warrior and twirled his gun back into its holster. He stepped behind the concrete column and listened, his old ears knowing too well that they might catch a secret from the shadows.

“You,” a gruff voice demanded from outside. Sinestro’s burning eyes turned to the man, an aging and bedraggled individual with an eye patch. There appeared to be a dark brown tail wrapped around his waist, over a set of armor and under his broad-shoulder blue robe. There was an air of power around the man, and the presence of authority. “Who are you?"

Sinestro’s citrine halo burned a little brighter as he lifted from the ground and floated from the building’s broken doorway. His proud posture remained unmoving as he crossed his arms and levitated higher into the light of the sun. “I am Sinestro,” he said firmly, looking down on the man.

“And I am Orion,” he said proudly, “one of the last of the saiyan elite.” A slight disturbance rippled through the sand as he, too, lifted from the ground, flying up to look eye to eye with the alien.

The lantern shook his head subtly, “In this world, we are all the last of something. You will find it rare to see another individual from your home universe, let alone of the same species or affiliation.” The red-skinned man cocked his head back snidely, “What is it that you want, saiyan?”

Orion steely demeanor remained unchanging, despite the lantern’s cockiness, perhaps thinking that he was yet another to underestimate his ability. “Are you the leader of these bandits or did you just get caught in the crossfire, like I did?”

“In these lands, I am the law,” Sinestro replied, “and this attack will not continue much longer, I assure you.” Noticing the warriors various injuries, the lantern gestured towards his ribs, “You appear to be injured. Perhaps you wish to lay low until I’ve managed to clear out the raiders?”

“Nothing that will slow me down too much,” Orion said flatly, clearly disinterested in furthering that line of questioning.

“Mm, suit yourself,” the deputy said, quirking his eyebrow. “I somewhat suspect that the bandit I killed inside was the leader, though I can’t say for certain.”

Orion nodded, “That may be, but this group doesn’t seem to be under any kind of centralized leadership, so I doubt that will have much effect on their coordination, or lack thereof.”

Sinestro smirked, “I suppose we will have to break their will to fight, then. We will show them the meaning of fear.”

The saiyan grinned, “I suppose so.” He glanced down at the massive truck that had eluded him before, “Perhaps starting there.”

He opened up his palm and a sphere of blue ki materialized, about the size of a marble. After a moment of focus, the sphere grew a few feet in diameter and cast an azure tint of the warrior’s face and body. Just as he released the sphere, the wheels spun wildly and the truck made its way towards the desert. The ki blast struck the bed, tearing a large portion away with a large explosion, but it kept on running regardless.

Both of the flying men scowled and gave chase, swooping from the sky and down to the truck’s level. A yellow ray sprung from Sinestro’s ring, latching on to the rear of the truck’s bumper, and he twisted, planting his feet into the ground. The power of the qwardian weapon managed to slow the truck, despite its hulking size. The deputy wordlessly gestured to the yellow band that ran between his middle finger and the truck, and Orion seized it with both hands.

With the might of both of the men, the military transport sputtered and roared, only managing to creep forward over the wand. Sweat beaded on both of the warrior’s foreheads as their strained both physically and mentally, their combined might overwhelming even the steepest of odds.

“Look out!” Orion suddenly shouted, releasing the beam.

Sinestro quickly looked up, just in time for the flanking marauders to open fire. A glassy half-globe formed over the men as the bullets fell upon them, the twanging of the shells leaving gentle ripples echoing over the construct’s surface.

“I need an opening,” Orion said simply, sliding back into a wide stance. Another orb of brilliant blue light appeared between his hands, and the lantern opened a small circle just in front of him. As the manic gunfire of the raiders ricocheted all around them, Orion fired a thick beam of ki through the port-hole and swept it left, the opening keeping track of the beam and it ploughed through the team of vagabonds.

A momentary silence filled the air, and both men disengaged their amazing abilities, standing beside one another in the dusty road.
