Following his advice was the lovely sound of explosion, rocks plummeted towards them and skipped right over the pair’s heads, as they were under just enough of a ledge to block the rolling rocks from crushing them. Piles of rock surrounded them and engulfed the valley. They were buried alive, but luckily not crushed, and in the darkness there was light and air pockets to keep the sand spiders away. The stones surrounded them and they were forced to crouch in the small dark space:
They were trapped.
With a swift look of unspoken agreement, they keenly watched through separate holes to find what had ambushed them. From Caira’s end, it was a poor view, so she used her senses to hear some rocks clattering as a couple small creatures began moving rocks out of the way to find their dead remains. What happens when they don’t find us? I better be ready to fight on Merik’s command.
Sensing five or six small creatures padding lightly over the sand, she noted that they were in the shape of mice - no, rats. There was a group of them, they wore rags for clothing and had matted grey and sand-spotted fur. Ticking sounds came from their feet and jaws that had outlined their abnormally sharp and orange-stained teeth.
Caira froze and gulped when it struck her that they were the prey.
They seemed to have a method of communication and were listening for movement, signs of life, or groans with the satellite ears perched on their small heads. Beady eyes moved toward Caira’s direction and the three foot tall creature rubbed its meaty paws together and began to dig a few feet away, tossing bits of clumped rock until finally, when Caira was surely ready to move the massive rock in front of her and surprise them, the rat ceased. Revealing something that had been hidden below their feet. It was the carcass of a crushed sand ray.
“What about the big ones?” One of the creatures said, with the intent that his arduous plan payed off.
“Saw them disappear at the last second, I did!” Another weasely figure with a bloodstained pelt, shifted his conniving eyes around the freshly formed dam of rock.
Caira didn’t like the look of those creepy little rats and Merik had later told her to let them be, rather than to attack and wipe out this bunch only to wait for a wave of an entire colony to track them down. Apparently rats were fertile and had many numbers. Something in her gut told her it was dangerous to let the creeps be, but after a while, they disappeared without much success from their planned ambush and climbed from their tomb.
“KNEW IT! I DID!” A voice shouted and pointed to the two whom revealed themselves in the dimmed light of dusk. The creature spoke, with words. “The others didn’t believe me, but I knew my prey hadn’t gotten away that easily!”
“SCOUNDREL!” Merik shouted and lunged to throw a well-meant punch at the rat.
But the creature was quick on its feet and evaded his throw with ease. Weak but they use explosives to do the work for them. she noted and followed the swift thing’s movements with her eyes.
“Hah! Ya’ know I’m the best at what I do! The Rat King will be pleased... Yes, yes. Master will be very pleased.”
Merik knocked the beast out with his telekinetic power, silencing the excited rattle of its jittering jaws and ticking teeth.
“What do we do with it?” She voiced, looking at it's carcass.
“Leave it here, one of its peers will assume a delayed rock fell or that it was the creatures of the night. Dusk is soon falling.” Merik was right. The female had noted that the creature had bashed its head on a rock severely, and that he wouldn’t be waking up anytime soon.
“More.. creatures?” She asked of the desert.
“Irrational things. Hunters and predators this time, they take cover in the night, because of the dense size of their bodies. Not like these pitifully weak morsels.”
Caira supposed power could be hidden or disguised in the night. Though it could be combined with lithe stealth to make an even more deadly combination. They were in the mountains and who knew what the darkness would bring?
