Just a suggestion, but why not have some characters skip a round, but their opponent is healed after the first round so they both are at full HP/SP?
Like say, there's 33 entries, the 31st through 33rd contestants we'll call A, B and C. A and B duke it out while C skips the first round, then whoever won the fight between A and B gets returned to full stats and gets to fight C. Obviously that'll be an extra fight to judge and whatnot but I think it's easier to write for the contestants than a triple battle.
